That price seems insanely high.

In the past two months, I've brought five regs in for annual service to two different shops. Two Apeks, One Beuchat, One OMS and One Mares. The retail on each was about $25.00, except for the Mares, which is older and may need a few more parts. That will cost me about $50.00.

So, is this warranty card kept by Apeks? All my warranty stuff was sent in by my dive shop at home when I bought the equipment....but I don't think I received anything....I thought they could tell by the serial number or something?
The other thing he told me was that only the metal parts that might be changed are covered under the warranty...everything else I pay for. He made a distinction between an annual service and a complete overhaul.
Peace,
Cathie

Cathie,
The "card" is one of the pages in your owners manual where the tech signs off for yearly service. You keep it.
You should also have sent a card in to SeaQuest to register the reg.
An overhaul is a complete rebuild with a parts kit. Annual service may mean that too, but if the reg is within Apeks' overhaul interval, it's just an inspection and function test.
As for the metal parts, there really aren't any in the overhaul kit except maybe the HP seat has a metal shaft. I don't know what this guy is talking about. There are plenty of 0-rings too, and two first stage diaphrams.
Neil
This is a scan from an actual parts kit. Not good quality but you can see how many parts there are.

They are taking you for a ride. I suggest you call them right away. Ask them if your regs are done, or if they have started. If they say no, then take your reg elsewhere.

I would insist that they change all the o-rings. Any serious tech will change every O-ring when they open a reg. The reason is that O-rings cost the shop a few cents, and if you bother to take the O-ring out and dress it you may as well change it. Also, taking the O-ring out may damage it, and it's just easier to pop in a new one than to try and reuse an old one.

Neil is dead on in his post. The Apeks kits cost around $20 and include all the O-rings and seats and 1st stage diaphragm. There is also no reason for the high price.

At the minimum call them and tell them that you want them to replace:

All the O-rings with the ones issued by Apeks for that reg.
All 3 seats
The diaphragm in the first stage.

If they want to charge a lot of money for this, ask them to itemize the charge.

They SHOULD also look at the exhaust flapper and make sure it's sound. Apeks suggests replacing it in their service manual, but curiously the overhaul kit doesn't include one. They are usually fine to just leave in place, but they should be inspected.

It really pays to find a good shop to do your service. Even if this means that you have to send it in by mail.

It sounds to me that this shop doesn't know much about regs, and didn't really want to do the servicve. They figured that for $200 it would be worth it to them.

Heck, at that price they could afford to send it to another shop to do the service and still turn a nice profit.

Good luck with it, and let us know how it turned out.

.........the main question is......will you be able to sleep at night, once you get them back from 'service' ? Cut your losses and get your reg back, and start over with a shop you trust....you might have to pay this shop a nominal fee for looking at your reg, but I wouldn't let them do any serious work on it. Yeah, you're gonna have to pay another shop to rework it........sometimes we learn things the hard way.

Cathie I would say RUN! From what you've told me this guy wouldn't be working on my regs. If you have to, mail it to a service center. Any diaphragm reg I know gets the diaphragms replace with an annual. Most piston regs get o rings. Both get new HP seats.
I, personally, do not service my regs annually. Some brands can even recommend two years now. I have a Sherwood that has gone for years without any attention. My Zeagle 1st stage exhibited NO wear after a HARD year and hundreds of dives. My buddy's Zeagle has nearly 3 years on it and hasn't been opened yet.
Normally a second stage gets the brunt of wear, and that being the inlet seat, (poppet). Salt and sand however do take their toll on o rings at swivel locations.
To me $200 is WAY out of line. Locally, a 1st and 2nd rebuild will run you around $35 or so... Keep looking! (All comments are just my personal opinions/experiences)

Considering that Apeks is now owned by Aqualung and the 50 series is a pretty popular reg I would say grab the reg and run for your life since they did not recognize the brand.

We had all 4 of our Apeks regs serviced for about the same price they are quoting you. same model as your as well. You might also want to drop Apeks a line about this shop and what you talked about with the shop, sounds to me like they need to be dropped from the service listing.

Just a clarification, Apeks is not owned by Aqualung as far as I know. I believe Aqualung is their distributor.

I would get the regulator back. Since you have your warranty, you should only pay for labor and not parts/ Get it back, then report the shop to Apeks or Seaquest. That is if they are an apeks dealer.

I work for an LDS and that is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. An average service ranges from 30-60 USD for labor (depends on the shop) plus parts if it's not under warranty.

I have only dealt with Scubapro regs and a few other brands but at the most in my experience that it should cost 100 bucks at most and on average 75 for regs not under warranty. That's labor plus parts.

Sounds to me like you're getting taken. BUT I have 0 experience with Apeks so I cannot say for certain.

$200.00 is insane...This guy is trying to rip you off.

The charge around here is $18.00 a stage + parts. (If not under warranty) Usually around $70.00 total.
