My dad and I are going for a week in early August. It looks pretty cool online, but haven't been able to read many reviews. Are there any things to look out for? Recommendations? Stories from anyone who's been recently?

Thanks

We were there 18 months ago and loved it. The only downside is the stairs. As long as you and your dad can handle that, its great. Diving is about as easy as it gets.

If you want to see the dolphins, I recommend the dolphin encounter over the dolphin dive. they are temperamental animals and you never know when they will actually show up.

I recommend the shark dive, especially if you haven't done one before. Its the first time we were able to swim with the sharks which was great! While its run by a different operator, AKR runs a boat over there directly from the resort. So sign up early when you arrive if you want to do it.

We were there over the week of New Years. Wonderful place. I would suggest spending the extra for a Key Superior room if you haven't already. Might be a bit warm without AC. The place is run very efficiently from Housekeeping to diving everything is well planned and executed. You will love it. The food, is good and plentiful. It was nice to sit down and have your meal brought to you. Meals are served to order, not out of a buffet. There is a guy down there tha makes his own hot sauce. If I try to spell his name I will just mess it up badly but ask about the hot sauce it is good. The stairs are kind of a pain but not as bad as I thought they would be. The boats are in good shape, the DM's are knowledgeable and safety minded. The diving is, well, in 2 words absolutely spectacular. The staff there for the most part have been there for awhile which to me speaks to the resorts commitment to provide not only a great resort but a good living for those employed there. My wife is a non diver and she enjoyed the trip as much as I did. Be sure to take an afternoon or evening and go to West End for lunch, or dinner and souviener shopping. The resort is beautiful, you will not want to leave. Two warnings are all I could think to give, this is not a 5 star resort. It is kinda rustic but the basics are there and they all worked while we were there. Remember not to get in a hurry because coming into the country and getting back out can be a slow process that seems to take forever. I think it is beacuse getting there you are excited to get to the resort and being that long awaited vacation and when leaving you don't really want to leave and you are tired and not looking forward to being stuffed into a tube at 35000' for an extended period of time. Just be patient, it will all work out an it is well worth the wait. Good luck on your adventure.

Was the hot sauce Celebrase? I definitely need to pick up a couple of bottles this time. Ran out last summer.

It is something like that, I have a bottle at home I will have to look at the label and check it out. At any rate one of the guys that works there makes it and bottles it. When I was there you asked for him ordered it and he brought it on Thursdays if I remember correctly.

His name is Celase. He is a waiter at AKR and makes his own hot sauce. I really like it. We live in Canada and its a little cooler here. It tends to coagulate if left in the fridge or cupboard. A quick blast in the microwave and its as good as new

I picked up a new bottle when I was at Yabba Ding Ding in Coxen Hole last Friday. Looks like the bottles are a little smaller than the one I picked up two years ago. Not sure what the exact shelf life of it is, but I probably should have picked up 2.

Having stayed in the West End for two weeks, just about every resturant had a different Honduran hot sauce. It was interesting as a foodie trying them out at dinner all week.

My favorite came from a beachside BBQ just across from Posada Arco Iris which is only open on Thursdays and Sundays. Lunch options were limited on Sunday so we ate there both times last week. Not sure what they used, but it was very, very good with their BBQ chicken.
