I'm sure ya'll hate seein these posts, but I need some input. I plan on doing my spearfishing in the gulf of mexico with scuba gear, shooting anything from snapper and grouper to amber jack and tuna. I think I'm gonna end up getting a Mako railgun, but which size would be appropriate for this style? Thanks

There's a lot of opinions on this so you'll ultimately have to just make your own decision. I started with a Riffe comp 3xs, which is 54 inches long. After a few years I got a Baja Plus, which is 67 inches long. I free dive hunt on the reef drop offs in front of the cuts here in Belize and that bigger gun doesn't feel so big in open water. If you're going for big amber jacks and tuna...I'd go for the bigger, more powerful gun. Again, just my opinion. Also there's some very knowledeable people on Spearboard.com You might try there.

I'm relatively new to spearing in the Gulf, and when it comes to spearguns being used in the Ocean, the "Bigger is Better" philosophy is true, but maybe what I learned (a lot from the great people here on scubaboard as well as spearboard, and spearfishingworld) can help you some. Mako guns are great, I shot one borrowed from a friend when I was visiting in Hawaii. The places that sale guns will advertise them as effective up to 15-20 feet, and I've even seen one place claim 28' on a 37" gun which I just don't beleive. The best rule of distance is plan to not shoot any further than 2-3 times the length of the shaft. Another thing to remember is to buy a spear tip which is good for the fish you're hunting. At first I was shooting catfish with a rock-point, but when I went to the Ocean, I was embarassed since I wasn't getting good penetration on fish, and lost two before I realized how to work around it. For big snapper, grouper, and AJ's, a tri-cut tip will work well. That's just the basics though. I'm sure there will be someone who will dispute something I said, but hopefully it will help you.

That's a huge range of fish for one gun... especially in Mississippi!
Rig divers use big multi-band guns, rigged with cable (called riding rigs) and slip tips so they can take down big AJs & lemonfish (cobia), as well as the bigger redsnappers, gags or even warsaws.

I used my Wong MGS for most of my scuba rig shooting, and now have Daryl's Magnum Hybrid. Used my Wong FL Freeshafter with a reel for the freediving. All of these guns are 55" to 57.5" long with rear plus or mid handles. (Lots of band stretch.)

Many other popular scuba guns in the central gulf are the big JBLs & Riffe's.

Mako 110cm (44") or 120cm (48") would be perfect, especially if you are just starting up. Price is right on them guns. Warranty and customer support is incredible.

Check out Rob Allen guns they are extremely nice I have a Tuna 1000 Railgun and I like it a lot and it was a great buy for the money.

I use a 32" Spearfishing Specialites Rhino. I've shot everything from snapper, grouper and hog fish. However, I am hoping Santa will bring me a Wong this year.:D

Well, I went this weekend and am hooked!!! I tell ya what, fishing with a pole will never be the same! I shot a 20 something pound snapper that drug me down 20ft, what a rush! I'll get pictures up as soon as i can
