The difficulty may not be all psychological. I pee plenty while diving, but find it impossible to start while kicking, however mildly. I have to just hang horizontally, relaxed. Then, once the flow starts, I can resume the swim.

I haven't been out in the open water diving yet, but I am just curious if being able to pee while taking a shower is in any way related to being able to pee in a wet suit? To the people who can't seem to make themselves pee in their wet suit, can you pee in the shower? Personally I don't seem to have a problem peeing in shower and am just curious if this "ability" is going to in any way translate over when wearing a wet suit.

Dear Nude,That said, dehydration + diving is a quick way to increase your chances of DCS.Pee if you can, hold it if you can, cut wee holes in your suit as a last resort, but avoid dehydration at all costs.
I must have missed the part where I said I TRY to be dehydrated. Just because I don't drink soda or tea doesn't mean I don't drink water. In fact, I think I said I drink water in my post (:

When I said, "my body is dehydrated..." I was really just talking about breathing the dry air and the body's tendency to be dehydrated - not that I was purposely dehydrating myself to avoid having to pee (:

It's really dangerous to have to pee and not do it while you're diving. Either you can get bent and lose all bladder function or if you get bent can lose all bladder function. I can't remember which byt either way it's no good.

Being afraid or "unable" to pee leads some divers (many women) to dive without being well hydrated... a state that can contribute to decompression stress.

She-P is a newish device allowing women in drysuits to have all the function and benefit of an out-board pee dump... just like their male buddies. She-P - The P-Valve Catheter Condom for Women

Loss of bladder control and an inability to pee both present themselves in some cases of DCS.

I have to admit the thought of peeing in my wetsuit makes me feel very uncomfortable!!

After our first ow dive the instructor asked who had pee'd in their suits. I turned to hubby and said "I'm buying my own suit today!!" It hadn't occured to me that anyone pees in their suits. However I now know its ok, but I still can't and would rather not!!

A few years back, I went whitewater rafting with a group of not-so-brite people who could not understand why I was at only person who had turned down a rental wetsuit. I told them that the water wasn't that cold and that I didn't feel like sitting in someone else's pee for an entire day. A guide overheard our conversation and said "Nobody ever pees in our wetsuits". As one girl turned to tell me "I told you so", the guide winked at me and walked off laughing. At the end of the day, this same guide told the group "Just keep telling yourself that you were the first person ever to pee in your suit"; I winked at the girl, but left out the "I told you so".

Personally, I have no problem peing in my own suit, but I can't pee and swim at the same time. I have to stop, act like I'm adjusting my gear, and answer nature's call. I guess I can't multi-task.

In six pages, I can't believe that no one has posted the old adage:

"There are two types of divers. The ones that pee in their wetsuits, and the one's that say they don't."

Me?? I'm a pee-er and have no problems.

Isn't it "Those that pee in their wetsuits and those that lie about it"?

I mean, same general idea though.

Ok well I think I am cured. What I ended up doing to get over my psychological block was waiting until I was busting to go to the toilet and then I did a 60 minute dive so I pretty much had to go! It still took about 30 minutes though :rofl3: And I couldn't kick or anything or it would 'ruin' the moment. Anyway, it was nice not to come out of the water busting for once.

Ok well I think I am cured. ......
thats because you were among friends who believe you find a happy place when you pee in your wetsuit :lotsalove:

i once was stuck in my drysuit all alone for a long period of time and at some point i started thinking it would be ok to pee in it (i was unzipped by a stranger at that point) - afterall its ONLY urine... there are worse things in the world
