So I guess the general consensus is to just save up and get the Shearwater Petrel? Guess I'll have to see what I can do in terms of money and hopefully aim for it.

Does anyone otherwise have any experience with the other computers? (reviews would be great)

They're down in price to $830 new now, and that's for the current hardware version with the compass without negotiating any kind of a discount from the dealer. A nice used one without the compass would probably be in the $650 ballpark (dealer cost is about $700 and change for a brand new Petrel 2, so I'd be reluctant to pay more than that for a used Petrel 1).
