Boca Raton Police: Snorkeler hurt in hit-and-run boating accident. - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Snorkeler hurt badly in hit-and-run boating accident

A snorkeler was seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a hit-and-run boating accident off South Inlet Park in Boca Raton, police said.

The 21-year-old, who was not identified, was snorkeling in water about 50- to 75-yards offshore in water 10 feet deep when a white, 25-foot boat with a blue stripe crashed into him and kept going south, Boca Raton police said.

The accident happened about 4 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Ocean Drive, just south of the Boca Inlet, police said. The victim was taken to Delray Medical Center with serious injuries.

Witnesses told police that there were four to six people on the boat, which had a center console and twin, white Evinrude E-Tec motors.

That SUCKS.

Prayers that he recovers ok. And that the boater is caught.

Hopefully someone got a pic of this jack%$$ with the boat.
Everyone onboard should be charged
Hope the injured pulls through OK.

It sounds like the boat came out of the inlet, cranked on the RPM's, and hung a hard right to blast by the Deerfield Pier on the way down to Hillsboro. There is some serious partying going on in Lake Boca on sunny weekends - two weeks? ago there was Boca Bash - a Facebook-only event that came out of nowhere. Boca PD had 45 officers at the ramp in the morning then - maybe 30 police cars. The Lake was absolutely full and there were hundreds of people trying to hitch rides out to the flotillae.
I hope they get these people, but it will be hard if they don't step forward. The Boca Raton inlet cam has been down for a long time with the construction by the Boca Resort, and unless someone saw something offshore nearby, it's tough to coordinate catching someone out there.
With 4 to 6 people on the boat, someone onboard knew that they might at least have hit someone. There is no excuse for failure to stop at that point.

Just wondering, did this snorkeler have a dive flag? Anything to let the boat know there was someone in the water?

And just to be perfectly clear, I am not condoning the actions of the boater, quite the opposite. But hoping the the snorkeler was playing by the rules.

They should be making the laws and penalties a lot stricter. Maybe then more people would pay attention. I mean you hit and run in a car all types of consequences to face, but run over a snorkeler or diver little slap on the wrist.
