Drowned diver's equipment being checked by Guard || Autopsy confirms cause of death

TOMS RIVER BUREAU
POINT PLEASANT BEACH — An autopsy has revealed that a recreational diver pulled from the Atlantic Ocean about 50 miles off the coast on Wednesday had drowned, authorities said Friday.
The autopsy showed that the cause of Nathaniel Yangco's death was asphyxiation due to drowning, said Capt. Jeff Harper of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Yangco, 32, of Tenth Street in Jersey City, was pulled lifeless from the ocean by a dive instructor some time before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and taken to the Manasquan Inlet Coast Guard station here, Harper said.
Yangco was on a recreational diving expedition on the Jeanne II out of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, when he died, Harper said.
Yangco was at a depth of 140 feet when his diving partner noticed he was having trouble with his regulator, a device that regulates air in and out of the mouth, Harper said.
The Coast Guard is examining Yangco's diving equipment in an attempt to find out what happened, Harper said.
The partner gave Yangco his regulator, which Harper surmised was an extra regulator that divers carry for emergencies. The pair headed for the surface, but at one point, the partner felt a tug and then looked and saw Yangco descending, Harper said.
Then, the partner lost sight of Yangco, surfaced and told the dive instructor what had happened.
The dive instructor went down twice and found Yangco the second time, Harper said.
Harper did not have the name of the partner or the instructor.
"From what we heard, he (Yangco) was not that experienced" at diving, Harper said.

Does anyone know if he was on a cert dive?

Doubt it....most LDS's do their Open Water certs at Dutch Springs or something similar....Besides, I don't think they'd do a cert dive at 140 ft.....

His family told my family that he was in a class. (perhaps AOW?)

Several shops that dive with us bring folks out on the boat for wreck and deep dives for AOW.

Still wouldn't explain why he was at 140, if that was even actually the case.
