A stunner on Anacapa. 50+ viz on dive one, clear water, no current for the rest of the day. Just a gorgeous day of diving on Saturday 12-29.
Claudette and I dived with several of our SoCal Homies on the Spectre. Excellent conditions, beautiful weather.
Here are some shots from 'capa.
Enjoy.

Ripping Current
The conditions were so nice on dive one, I decided it was time for a little scooter dancing. I positioned Claudette high on the kelp as I wanted to shoot directly into the sun. I blasted the strobes to light her up a bit so I didn't get a complete silhouette. She takes direction so well and its scary how easy it is to direct her. Plus she loves to play, and that was what I really wanted to capture - her just playing with the scoot.
Claudette found this coffee bean cowrey on a clam shell. When she brought it over to me, its mantel was fully extended (we love these little guys) so I grabbed a shot.
As she went to put him back, the guy fell off the shell. When she put him
back on the shell, he fully retracted his mantel - so she brought him back to me for another shot
This time moving very slowly, she successfully put him back on the ledge where she found him. I went over and saw he had his mantel half-way up, so I grabbed another shot. Now you can see the three phases of this guy's convertible top!
Anyone who shoots can tell you the shots they want back. The time the settings weren't right on the cam, the time they silted a perfectly good shot opportunity, the time they spooked the critter, the time when they simply saw something really cool, but didn't know how to capture it accurately with the shot. We all have shots we'd like to have back. This is my latest. I saw this guy (I think its a Kelp Fish) hiding out in a Red Gorgonian. He was small, and sort of peeking at me. I went over to him and was able to get one shot before he moved deeper into the Gorg and was simply un-shootable. This is one of those times I wish I had a deeper skill set to better manage the light and focus. This shot doesn't begin to convey the beauty of that little multi-colored fish peeking out of the red bars.
A sandy Sandy. Nothing like being a Nudi climbing a sand dune in the desert...
Fed Ex, eggin' the place up
This little 'tata was reaching into the great void. You know he sensed a sponge (which is their food source) was close by, but the little guy needed a GPS to find it. He was reaching out in all directions as far as he could. It was fun to watch. I wanted to compose this with him far right, with the focus spotted on his gill ring (that fluffy bow on his butt) so you'd get the feeling of him reaching into the void. The thing I've never noticed before, and I've shot tons of these things, is the clear band at the base of his rhinophores (the antenna thingys.) Who knew?
