Today I had my first Turkish Coffee. I was at a meeting with 10 or 12 people in the room. A gentleman in traditional apparel (robs and headress) came in carrying a silver pot with a very long curved spout on it. He had 2 very small cups, allmost doll house sized in which he served the Turkish coffee. Think table spoon of instant coffee and maybe one table spoon of water or less. Yes, we are talking strong and thick syrup like coffee here. Not bad either. He went around the room serving each guest in turn their coffee. I did mention he only had two cups didn’t I? I reckon by my count I was the 5th person to drink out of my cup and I was not the last either. This is an interesting culture here. But you have to remember it is a desert based culture where water is precious and in short supply so while some of their customs are to us western mind (with our flowing streams and abundance of water) theirs make perfect sense in their environment.
Anyway, that was part of my day, turkish coffee, after 3 cups of chai and 1 soda pop. The Iraqi people are very gracious host. Gee, its almost 10:30 in the evening and I am still wide awake. Wonder why? Forutnatly, I do handle caffeine well and will be able to sleep just fine once I get ready for bed.
I truely appreciate everyones support there at home. The homage of the monthly dive report being named after me until I return as a sort of candle in the window, the help of all the people in getting the pictures posted it means a lot to me.
Now this comming Veterans Day, do me a favor, find a Viet Nam vet and thank them for their service. For they truely had it rough. I have internet and a regular bed and 3 hot meals a day. The had a hooch, c-rations and very unwelcome return.
I look forward to seeing everyone when I return in 11 months. Dive safe.
