I see the point of both arguments. But the bottom line is there are dive operations in this world that are very isolated and regulations are non existent. Of course there should be proof of quality products (air) somehow in the system, but there should also be no world hunger.

It's the seller's responsibility to provide a safe product, I agree.

But like Don is saying, if you are going somewhere that may not have proof it would be like taking your own food to a starving village if you have the means. Pack your own lunch if you can I suppose.

If you are going to demand copies of air quality testing I would imagine you are going to limit your dive destination choices by more than 75%.

Just like about 3/4 of the world is starving right now. (a wild guess to make a point, don't ask for statistics please)

Cozumel is hardly Eniwetok, or Jan Mayen or the Falklands. If they can run and supply a good hotel they should be able have their air analyzed.

I'm not sure about this idea of DAN doing charity work for commercial money-making dive operators. I hope the money I send them is not being used for this. This is not the case of sending food to starving people -- a commercial dive operator needs to pay for his own equipment to provide safe air.

That's been my feeling as well, but I am trying to keep an open mind and hope they have a bigger plan. We'll know in a month I bet.

True on the should, but nope on the reality. I don't have any idea what DAN's bigger plan might be but hope it's a good one.

On my side of this, I'll take my personal analyzers and you can be sure I'll post if I ever find anything.

Why does the phrase "DAN's bigger plan" raise my hackles?

Me too, but I think voting with your wallet is a better approach. I wonder how long it would take them to get a great system in place if all you gringos decided to take your diving vacation at a US destination next year ... and let them know why?

I hope they have more in mind that just this donation.

I've done that in my own way, but made noise when I did.

I agree they should...they should be in the 25% eating. Running and supplying a good hotel is different than running and supplying a good dive shop.

People get food poisoning at good hotels too.

True, but it's a black mark on the dive operators that they can't get them without having the analyzers donated. They're not that expensive and it's their responsibility to make sure the gas they pump is safe.

Actually, very few ops in Cozumel pump their own gas... But, I do agree with you... I also feel it is the dive Ops responsibility to ensure the gas they provide in their tanks is safe... ALMOST as much is it is our own even if we are then double or triple checking (in a perfect world) what we are breathing. I've gotten fills now where there was an inline CO monitor at the fill station reading zero CO... I still checked my tank with my own CO analyzer just before diving it..

And yes.. $340 for an Analox CO EII is a small price to pay when we are talking about safety... I paid $290 for mine including bump gas.. (A group buy would bring this price down - Analox EII CO Carbon Monoxide Analyzer GROUP BUY SPECIAL) How much does a DAN Emergency 02 kit cost anyway? A good bit more... Oh wait.. How many Ops / boats actually have functional emergency 02 on board as well??? I could name quite a few that do... And shockingly, quite a few more who do not.. That of course should be something a diver visiting Coz should also ask their regular or potential operator.. Got Emergency 02? Test for CO? Test on the boat for Nitrox 02 percentages..? Things you might want to know when choosing an OP anywhere..

I don't think the hand held one is a good option for a dive operation of any size. If you are pumping quantity and need quick turn around on tank fills you need to monitor what your compressor is making so you know there is a problem before you have a bunch of contaminated tanks.
