Lets STOP the shark killing

BTW mail is sent.

Just submitted my first comment to Amazon (see below). I'm sure there will be others to follow as I find more links to such ethically and reprehensible products.

After hearing of this product being for sale, I have decided to not purchase further products from Amazon.com until it and other shark fin soup items are removed.

Amazon states that it does not allow products which violate the law. Since shark finning has been banned in a number of regions worldwide, and I doubt that Roland can verify all shark fin used in their product is legally caught, I think Amazon has a legal mandate to remove it.

This says nothing of the ecological disgrace caused by the killing of millions of sharks annually, many of which are simply finned (have their fins cut off) and are tossed back in the water alive only to die.

The ecological effects of removing top carnivores from coral reef and other marine habitats is just beginning to be recognized. Several scientists feel the near total regional extinctions in many waters have contributed significantly to the decline in coral reef health.

I deplore Amazon's decision to carry these products and will refrain from making any purchases here until this issue is resolved.

Believe it or not, here is the reason (copied and pasted from the product page at Amazon):

"Roland Sharkfin Soup with crab meat is made out of the finest sharkfin. Reputed to be an aphrodisiac, this expensive delicacy is actually the cartilage of the shark's dorsal fin, pectoral fin and the lower portion of the tail fin."

I guess people that buy this never heard of Viagra.
you know if Pfizer and other drug companies would just send out free samples of Viagra, Cialis etc to a few key places they alone could save a lot of the worlds endangered species.....
That would be a good one, get Pfizer in on the act, maybe people would stop buying shark fin and start buying Viagra...

Could be a great advertising campaign for them! And save endangered species at the same time.

Mike... GREAT idea! Viagra and Cialis could save the sharks, the sea cucumbers, the rhinos, etc., etc. I love it! I'll bet it would even be a lot cheaper than these exotic "aphrodisiacs" (which don't work anyway, at least not sea cucumber).

If you are an Amazon customer, use the e-mail form through your account on their site. This will increase your impact.

Here's the reply I got back from Amazon:

Thank you for writing to Amazon.com with your comments.

We have great respect for your concerns. One of our goals as an
online retailer, however, is to offer our customers the ability to
purchase a wide variety of products on our site. It is unfortunate
but inevitable thato some f our customers may find a few of these
items objectionable.

Please note that the items in our Gourmet store are offered by third-
party merchants--they are not sold directly by Amazon.com.

Our seller's agreement specifies the following restrictions
concerning the sale of living creatures:

"The sale of live creatures and illegal wildlife products is
prohibited, and this includes any type of pet or livestock ... the
sale of live shellfish and crustaceans is permitted, as long as the
seller adheres to all state and federal laws concerning the delivery
and sales of these perishable food items."

We always value customer feedback, and I have passed along your
desire that we exclude items of this sort from our site. Thank you
again for taking the time to contact us at Amazon.com.

Since I rarely buy from Amazon, I guess they are not jumping too high to regain my dollars. I can buy books etc elsewhere.
