At a bare minimum, please be sure that you are very competent and confident in deploying a surface marker buoy from depth. Whereas you may be fortunate to dive w/o strong currents, it is more likely that you will and that in the course of a week of diving, you will at some point get separated from your group, dive guide or buddy and will want to be able to handle that confidently and w/o panic. I have friends that were there this past February and wish they had reef hooks and didn't-- so, yes- there are currents. Here is a link to some info on what to expect in terms of sea life, visibility and water and surface temps by month: Socorro Island Overview | Nautilus Liveaboards

What do you think about Nautilus Under Sea? I'm planning to go there in December 2018.

Thanks
Dan

The Nautilus Under Sea use to belong to the Undersea Hunter outfit and did the Cocos trips. They sold it to the Nautilus folks a few years back. I was told that they were going to do some upgrades to the boat when they bought it and make it bigger but not sure if they actually did that or not.

Thanks. I'm committed now :D. Put 50% deposit for 12/22-30/2018 in Standard Stateroom cabin. Anyone want to share cabin with me? :)

I realize that what I experienced on my trip does not necessarily mean that every trip will be the same, but on the trip I was on, the currents were not that challenging. I found diving in the Florida Keys to have much stronger currents.

Here are a couple pics that I took while on my Socorro trip. They are not great pics, but look at the bubbles relative to the divers and that will give you an idea of the current.

Same here. There was only one spot we went to where the current was very strong and that was near the main Island and we just went with the current. No big deal. At the Boiler and Roca Partita there was little to no current and that's where we had the best diving anyway.

I am not personally familiar with that boat-- but, I am a fan of Nautilus and have high regard for them as a brand and operator.

That looks like ZERO current. I like it :D

Like they say, "A picture is worth 1000 words". I could have typed a long story, but sometimes a picture works far better. There was a little current for the guys hanging on to the tag line, but not much.

Thanks for the feedback. I put my deposit down for the Nautilus Explorer in December. Can't wait!

For those of you who have gone to Socorro with Nautilus, do I need to have my own DiveAlert, dSMB/reel, and/or reef hook?

Also, what was the lights policy? The lady I spoke to from the booking line said "captain's discretion". I was planning on getting/bringing a dual-light GoPro camera tray, but if I'm not allowed to use lights at all there's no need to spend money unnecessarily.
