... I look at my pony bottle and think, hmmm I have a redundant supply if something happens... the thought crossed my mind, and even though I know it was naughty... I just quietly slipped into the water for my first solo dive.
Not naughty. Smart!
Now let me say that given the choice I'd much rather dive with my boyfriend than solo, but that particular solo dive was awesome.
That's why we dive solo.
On the way out I saw the kid with the padi silting and arm flailing specialty entering the water with another diver and was so grateful it was not me he was with.
That's why you were smart. With this kid you were diving solo with a very serious handicap.
I'm supposed to feel guilty about this... I broke the rules... I did something wrong.. but I don't regret it. at all. I loved that dive. I want to do it again. I don't feel bad for doing it, I feel bad for not feeling bad about it...
Guilty??? Rules??? Wrong??? Not in my book. You did everything right. No reason to feel bad for not feeling bad. One thing you might consider is to get the SDI Solo Diver Manual and study it. It has a lot of great information and some suggestions as to additional gear (beside the redundant, independant air), types of emergencies and how to prepair for them, etc. Welcome to the ranks of the free.
Also, here's a video presentation that will give you a much better perspective:

NOTE: After reading subsequent posts (boulderjohn) re. the OP's "attitude" I retract the above.
