I have had excellent service from mine 100'+ with no problems. It is a good reg in my opinion because it is simple and fairly rugged.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I think I'll restrict my dives to under 300 ft for now :shakehead and go ahead with the alpha 7 / sp4. What I have heard here just confirms every review I've seen and I like simplicity. Sounds like it is engineered very well.
I'll also try to stay in water warmer than 50 degrees:frosty: . Global warming will help there.
I do like my cars complicated, severely engineered and high performing, but for now, I'm at the 'simple and works' level for scuba stuff.

Stu S,

What first stage are you using with the Alpha? I could potentially upgrade the first stage when I buy...but really don't feel it necessary. But since my LDS is giving me 25% off any Pinnacle wetsuit...

SP-5 and Alpha 7 second stage for me. SP-4 and Alpha 7 second stage my for daughter. It is my understanding that both first stages are equivalent, except SP-5 is a bit shorter. We haven't tried the others.

Is this a "beginner's reg"? Only if you dive like one. Advancing in diving is improving multiple skills, and not just how deep you go. It is being organized and making good decisions constantly, at all times. That's what I've learned since I started in 1977. That's what I teach my kid.

Happy diving!

I'm diving with the LDS today. I will be using the Alpha 8 Sport with a SP-5. If I don't have any problems with it, I will buying it as a package with the octo, gauges and BC.

The LDS has thrown in a Pinnalce wetsuit at 25% off if I get it with the other stuff. Since I had already decided on a Pinnacle and to get one over the winter, I'll just get it now and save a few bucks!

Thanks for answering my questions.
