I am progressing into more advanced finning techniques - Back Kicks, Helicopter, modified Frog and etc. I can accomplish this with my Avanti Quattro, but I'm wondering if I should be using Jets? Are the Jets more efficient with the kicks I mentioned?

For those who had tried both, which do you prefer?

Hi Mtbr:

I have used Aqualung Blades II and Jets, which is not what you asked about but I would liken the Mares Avanti Quattro to the Blades (long, narrow, and floppy). I have also seen first hand the attempts at the various kicks with the Mares Avanti Quattro and it was more difficult for the diver to use them than it was for me to use my Jets with the same task at hand. I will also throw out there that when I was using my Blades and trying the various kicks, I wasn't as efficient as when using Jets.

The Jets and their cousins seem more rigid and well suited for the kicks you specified. But who knows, with enough practice maybe a diver can finesse almost any fin to perform these kicks. If you're already using Mares Avanti Quattro fins and having success, then why bother? For me though, I will never give up my Jets (I just need to continue practicing my kicks). They are cheap, durable, can be adapted to have spring straps, and if you don't like them after you give them a fair shake, someone will take them off your hands.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

With kind regards,
Thomas

I made the switch last year from quattros to OMS slipstreams, which are similar in design to the jets, and can't see going back. I think they are much more efficient for the type kicks you mention. Partly due to the fact that my quattros were getting floppy from lots of use, but I don't think even a brand new pair would perform as well as the jets or slipstreams. They just have more "torque" and responsiveness which equals better control. IMHO.
