Ocean Frontiers is the outfit we'd be diving with. I hope you post a report next spring, although KMD has dived with them before and said it was superb.

Unfortunately, we budget time and money for two major trips a year, and 2008 will be Cave 1 in the spring, and a cruise in the South Pacific in the fall, so Grand Cayman will have to wait until 2009. And KMD's already pointed out to me that, by that time, we may all be scheduling Cave 2 . . .

I believe that's EXACTLY what she means. After having done a couple of them, I can completely understand the allure.

On slightly different angle, I'm glad to have finally gone to Cozumel but to be honest I don't think I'd go back. For the money there's better diving to be had ... and certainly more convenient diving ... in other places in the Caribbean. I'd still put Bonaire at the top of my list (been there 3 times, and wouldn't hesistate to go back). Roatan at CocoView is also higher on the list.

The vis was better in Cozumel, overall ... but the reefs and overall convenience of diving was better at those other places. In Coz, the diving was more expensive, and the most dives we could manage to get in per day was 3 ... in Bonaire or Roatan, that's a half-day's worth of diving, and I commonly managed 5 or 6 dives per day.

Bottom time is a high priority for me. Glad I did the trip, but now I can focus my vacation days and dollars where I can get a higher value.

Like Lynne, however, if I DID go back to that area it would be for the cenotes ... there's nothing quite like them anywhere else that I'm aware of ...

You need to get to the North side of the island(Roatan) to get some diving in....There are only 2 dives on the south side worth diving, Mary's Place & the shark dive(& possibly the Sea Mounts, but that's off shore too far to be considered south side diving), everything else is better on the North side, AKR ,ILR, BIBR will put you there- you get to dive West End also from these places....Also, the water 80% of the time is rough on the South side & sort of like glass on the north....My experience in 24 trips & over 450 dives there there anyway- also the views of my son that has over 3400 dives there......

We've been going to Akumal for 5yrs and I've been toying with doing intro to cave or just a cavern cert, but never got to it yet. After several enjoyable and uneventful cenote dives, this past trip I had a minor equipment malfunction during a cavern dive. Something that in open water would have taken me about 30 seconds to figure out and a few more to deal with. I was unpleasantly surprised (and very embaressed) at how quickly I started feeling panic come on. I did the second dive, again uneventfully, but I'm really feeling that even if it's something I only do a few days a year, I want to do some formal training before I go into a cavern again.

I'm not ... some people live to be offended. I don't think anything either of us said warranted being called pretentious and egotistical. Some folks just like to stir up crap. Frankly, Don ... :mooner:

It's good that you come to the defense of your friends but Geez Bob, I said nothing about you as you imply above. I thought she dissed the diving in Cozumel so I said something about it. Is that so bad?

Apparantly you were offended as well as some others and I regret that. Obviously she came back later and made comments about the diving but that was after my first response.

NWGratefulDiver:
Yeah ... I was wondering about that. Do you consider it a contest or something?

No Bob, it's not a contest. I was just trying to be friendly and show appreciation for the time you spent underwater and for your pictures.

Calling someone pretentious and egotistical doesn't come across as friendly ... in any context. In this case, it was completely without justification.

I appreciated your trip report, Lynne. I think everyone has different expectations when planning a trip and I always like to read many different reviews of the same place. I was in Coz last month diving for the first time, but I only got in 2 dives. We went to Tulum our last day and stopped in at some of the cenotes on the way back to PDC to pick up brochures for next time...whenever that is. I would also return to Cozumel because I like the town and I've only just sampled the diving there.

Bob, I never inferred you were either of those.

My replies to Lynne were not intended to be friendly yet I didn't intend for them to be offensive or nasty. I still don't think they were either of those. Pointed yes. Intentional or not I thought her original post was insensitive to the plight in the aftermath of Wilma. Insentitive to the large numbers of people currently posting here and planning trips and activities in Coz. I seriously doubt diving there today is typical of the diving before Wilma.

I may have been excessive in my interpretation of her intent but keep in mind I've read many of Lynne's posts not just the ones here.

Don, PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPLEASE???/:shakehead

I've edited my post because I think I might have been a little rough with Don Janni. Apologies.

Someone writes a trip report, an innocent and informative trip report based on THEIR feelings, but you don't agree with some of their view and impressions. So? We are all different, well, most of us anyway, and are not supposed to view everything the same. That's why it's called a trip report- tell me what it was like for YOU. Don't produce some cookie cutter responce that sounds like everyone else's.

Now divers are being accused of being INSENSITIVE when they write a report that sounds a bit different? YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME??????
