I'm headed to North Sulawesi this fall for 3 weeks. Does anyone know if taking a bottle for nightcaps is a hassle with Indonesian Customs?

Judging by the number of large Bintang beers that divers put away in Indonesia, and given that all the liveaboards and resorts stock alcohol, I can't imagine it's a problem. I've been on Indo liveaboards that are just fine with a customer bringing a bottle aboard too.

You are legally able to bring one bottle through customs- no problem. Every now and then I push my luck and bring 2 or 3. Even got caught once. The customs guy gave me a mean look. I responded with, "I'm sorry, sir. Maybe the fine is 100.000 Rupiah?" (About $10.00 USD.) He smiled, took the money, put the extra bottle in my bad, and I went on home. Nonetheless it scared me enough to go back to only bringing one bottle at a time. :D

Imported alcohol in Indonesia is very expensive because of taxes.
If you bring your own, you have to put it in checked baggage so you run the risk of it getting broken. As Matt said, they have a 1 liter/person limit.

Actually what you do is buy it on your way there duty free and then carry it on. I've done this a few times in Singapore with no problem. It's cheaper and it won't count as part of your weight limit either. The only problem I have is the Jack Daniels is about 1.1 liters so I'm actually bringing in more then the limit. :D

Yes, if you connect through Singapore you can pick it up at a duty free shop in Changi airport.

I connected once through KL and was able to do that, but it still cost more than in the US.
