Good heavens, is that possible? I had a company computer 10 years ago that had a IR transceiver. Which PC is this exactly?

About Macs: no experience from me, but my father went through 3 IR dongles before finding out one that worked with a Mac. I suggest you take your Mac (hopefully a portable :) to the store or tell them that you will be bringing the interface back if it doesn't work.

Does anyone know if it is possible to interface the Aladin Prime with a PC without using the uwatec usb infrared adapter.

My PC laptop does have infrared but I canot seem to get them to communicate.

If anyone knows of a work around any help would be appreciated.

1. Does your PC iR device work with anything else?
a. Does it show up in your "Device Manager"? Many times it does not, or the device is deactivated.
b. If it does work with something else, the problem is with the Aladin Prime.

2. Aladins want their beam to go 'right down their throat'. It's touchy.
3. When the PC makes a connection, you should see a little 'iR' icon in the system tray, and the PC should make a 'connect' sound.
4. Hopefully you have the Uwatec software windo open. Click the 'download' icon. It should bring up the linkage window.

So I have discovered that my PC's IR port is a Receiver only, so I am headed to the local comp store to get an IR/USB port....

I was using my PC as my Mac's IR port is also Receiver also, but really I want to use this with my mac.... anyone had any experiences on a mac ?

No such thing as 'receiver only'. It's a communications port, and you cannot communicate . . . .

Ummmm . . . that's not true if you have a remote control . . . the computer would accept only incoming signals, but people couldn't pull data off your PC.

 Make sure you get a fairly modern iRda device, like will work on the 64-bit machines of the future. :)

Actually Receiver only is now the norm, Apple Macbook Pros have had a receiver only for the last 10 years or so (was news to me but true), and in the Laptop Manual I have for my PC (HP) it states "receiver only".

After researching A bit more the Aladin Computer needs to receive a command before beginning to transmit the dive data.

I also tested the IRDA port on the PC and it does in fact receive but will not transmit. I paired it with a remote control and watched the IR communication using a digital camera to view the IR spectrum.

I'm currently shopping for a dongle for my mac.

Yeah it is part of the phase out of IR in favor of wifi/bluetooth, New PC's / Laptops only have receivers to support Remote Controls. I use my Mac as my T.V. and use an IR remote to control it from the couch.

Well, it sort of makes sense. And yes the HP support forums confirm it. Although I would be pissed off with such a computer :)

Anyway, final word of advice. Try getting a dongle that works on both PC and MAC (and, as Jax said, one that has drivers for 64 bit systems). The thing is that the PC software is IMHO better than the one on Macs. I explained it in detail in this post.

Good luck!

Great. Thanks for the info, going diving today then will continue my search.

Yeah, yeah, I corrected myself . . . I was being stupid . . . :(

I have a Mac Power Book (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with Snow Leopard OS (10.6.3). and have successfully used the UWATEC IRDA dongle (IR778 USB adapter) and JTrak (ver.1.2.3) to communicate with my Aladin Prime. I also have a iMAC but it only has a USB 1.0 and will not communicate; consequently, you will need a MAC with a USB 2.0 as a min. The consensus is that the PC version has more features. There is also another MAC program that you can use (MacDive). It has more features; unfortunately, you have to run a file conversion before you can import the data from JTrak. Good luck.
