We will be going to Coz for 6 days and then 6 days on the mainland. Trying to decide where to go. We're not really interested in PDC, too many people! We would like to be able to walk around and soak up the ambiance and go out to dinner, but stay at a nice, quiet place. Not interested in AI, thinking about a condo. Now all we need to figure out is where? Some place with good diving and other top-side activities too. No kids, just the two of us. So what is the general consensus, Akumal, Tulum or Puerto Aventuras? Thanks, Aqua

yep.

akumal, tulum or PA will suit you fine.

I would get on the phone and talk to people down ther and see what you feel like. book a day or two and if you want to move, move. Accomodation is like air down there. Good dive operations OTOH are like hens teeth.

We do the same thing every Dec., 6-7 days in Cozumel then 6-7 days in Akumal. I really like renting a condo right on the beach (Half Moon Bay) in Akumal after a week in Coz. It is the exact opposite. Akumal is pretty quiet, very laid back and relaxing and a good location if you want to do both ocean diving and cenotes. It's also about 1/2 way between PDC and Tulum so you could do day trips or go out of Akumal for dinner, etc.

If you want to just stay in Akumal and really relax then you don't even need to rent a car. There isn't alot there but the 6 restaurants are all good and depending on where you stay everything is within a 20 minute walk. There are 3 dive shops. They are all fine so it's really just a matter of which is most convenient to where you stay and who's attitude you like best. For cenote dives I would recommend Dennis from Diablo Divers.

If you want more of a gated resort community feel (complete with a marina and restaurant & shops area ... and the "swim with the dolphins"...) then Puerto Aventuras would be the choice.

A great site for info on the areas south of PDC is www.locogringo.com. The boards are very active and LogoGringo books most of the condos, villas and hotels in the area too. Their "lodging" section is a one-stop to see pics and descriptions on all of them.
