I spent a week at AKR. The time I spent there was late Dec and early January. To me the one thing that I would suggest is to get the Key Superior room. We had #27 and it was fantastic. It doesn't cost that much more for a Key Superior room but it was worth it to us. Take the time to make a trip into West End. It is a short/cheap cab ride and worth the effort. You really don't have to leave the resort if you don't want to though. We aren't much for partying so the place really appealed to us. 3 dives a day is normal with a chance at 4 on 1 day if you do the night dive. That was enough for me. Even if things get blown out on the north side, they will bus you over to the south side so you generally won't lose out on diving.

The food is very good, not served buffet style but cooked to order with 2 choices for the entree. The bbq on the key is fun, crab races, fire dancers, libo contest. The trip to the other key is fun too.

It is a well run resort and dive operation with nice comfortable boats and good crews. Most of the people that work there have been there for a long time. One of the guys that works as a food server has an excellent hot sauce he sells, be sure to try some and bring a couple of bottles home, we did.

My wife is a non diver but enjoyed the peace and quite of the resort. We will return to AKR. It is a good vacation and great diving. Hope you have as much fun as we did.

It is not a 5 star or even a 4 star resort though. The rooms have been described as rustic. Good description IMO. The people are very friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make you comfortable. No phones, no TV's in the room, just a nice quiet peaceful atmosphere.

Nice resort, very consistent product (a rarity in the Caribbean, and certainly in the Bay Islands).

You asked about the weather. The North and West dive operations can be heavily affected at this time of year by "Northers", but AKR has the wherewithal to move the bulk of its operation to the South side. Not many others can do this.

It can be fairly choppy and quite often rainy. If one of those cold fronts from Canada hits Texas, it will likely also affect Belize, Cozumel and quite possibly the North and West shores of Roatan.

I would suggest you bring a Goretex shell parka for the dive boat and likely traversing the property at AKR.

Water temps on the North/West will likely be in the 78~80° range, maybe 82° along the central South shore. Not a whole lot of variation, really.

To answer some of the questions:

The average temperature is around 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a tropical climate.
Water temp ranges from 79 in Jan to 86 in June. Then it starts dropping at the end of Oct from 86 to 79 at the end of Dec.

Open 7:00am – 9:00pm Daily

Available for guests to store personal dive gear. The storage is conveniently located right at the dock, so you’ll never need to lug your gear from the key or the hill!

Hope I can help anyone who needs to get there :), Joe

Hi, I forgot to mention, the gear lockers at AKR are made out of wood and are big enough to store your gear. Each person gets one, no need to share. Bring hangers if you want, but they have them available for everyone to use. About Whale sharks, I was going through all postings from RoatanMan and saw that he saw them mostly may-june during full moon. Most encounters have been in Utila, but some have been seeing lately off Roatan, Good Luck! :)

Hi there. Four of us were there in April and had a fantastic time-but can't speak about the water temps the time of year you are going. We are returning again in April of 2012. Yes, get a Key Superior room if possible - beautiful views. They offer a dolphin dive where you first get to interact with a dolphin- yes in their pen. Then you put on your dive gear and dive a reef just off the key and two trained dolphins swim in and around you while you dive.

They offer a shark dive - it is quite a long boat ride 45 minutes or so . . . they have you descend to about 70' and "swim" around while the 10 - 15 caribbean reef sharks - swim around you. After you "swim" a little bit, they have you kneel backs agains a reef structure and they open the bucket of chum and the feeding begins. Quite a cool experience - our first time on a shark dive.

We found that every dive sight offered some very different features and aquatic life. They also have two shipwrecks that we dove. I also did the shore diving that is offered- 2 times- nothing remarkable, but worth the effort. They have a shack with tanks at the tip of the key and someone there to assist you if needed.

Enjoy your trip!!!

Do they at least eat the dolphins when they die instead of letting it go to waste?
