AKR is simply awesome, certainly the best run operation around the island. Those trying to decide where to stay, go with ocean facing bungalows on the key, you won't be sorry. Sure you'll have to walk across the island and then take a water taxi across the channel but it only takes a couple of minutes and you won't be sorry.

As far as the sand flies are concerned - the only location they were present during our stay during breeze-less days was around the docks, rinse tanks and the locker room, so make sure you use some Cutters or Cactus Juice (if it works for you) around that area or you will get many bites on uncovered body parts. Personally, I wore a nylon rash guard to protect from the sun and got zero bites.

Here are some pictures we took during our week long stay at the resort in 2009:

I have to second that the ocean side bungalows are the way to go. While laying in your hammock, the breeze kicks up enough to rock you gently to sleep. Tough way to off gas before your next dive!

I appreciate your enthusiasm for AKR. We have been there before and in fact are headed back to Roatan this week for a two week stay, one week of which will be at AKR.....but I am just wondering just how many of the dive operations and how many of the all inclusive resorts on Roanna have you been to, to make the statement that AKR is the "certainly the best run operation on the island".....granted it is a fantastic place or we would not be going back but just wondering what basis of comparison you have for that statement

Valid point - my original post should have read 'certainly one of the best run operation on the island'... I've tried to edit my OP but the site won't allow it at this point...

Really great pictures, thanks for sharing. Question. I see that you dove the wreck El Aguila--wondering if the very large Moray is still there hanging out on the bow and the beautiful Pillar Coral pictures that you took, were they at Overheat Reef?

Thanks. I think this moray

was shot at El Aguila. Our DM said they used to feed him but not anymore so he started biting people - looked safe to me :-) The coral was shot on the the South Side, Mary's place I think.
