AKR: 3 boat dives per day, 2 night boat dives per week, shore diving during shop hours ($1629+tax for two in a room with AC)

CCV: 2 boat dives per day, shore diving 24/7 ($2828+tax for two in a room with AC)

Those additional off hours dives in the CCV front porch costs $1,199 more per couple and you are getting fewer boat dives.

CCV gives you two/two tank boat dives 0830 and 1400.

That's 4 with plenty of time for a nap. For some divers, the second boat dive is decried as the same dive again...as you get dropped off on the wall to make an exit at the shore dives. This is the perception of newer divers who have not learned to look past their SPG. This is where CCV appeals to the advanced diver- one with skills and patience to look for the abundant macro.

Yes, then there's the shore dive in the FRONT YARD. (No porch here) It is thought that about 25-35 shore dive entries occur here daily, all day and long into the night. (Yup, doing that same dive over and over) What is wrong with these people that they consistently overpay to dive there?

I'm nixing the whole idea of a dive resort on Roatan...I'm also looking at Grand Cayman. Found a place with 2 tank dives and unlimited shore diving for the same price as Roatan. NO guided dives! Which is worth paying extra to me. Might be a little more with food costs but the travel time is half the hours..

Sounds like a plan! It's quicker, easier, and cheaper for me to get to Grand Cayman instead of Roatan and I am only coming from the Midwest! There are 2 dive ops that I know of on Grand Cayman that are well-known for their tech diving, they are DiveTech and In-Depth, but there are many fine dive ops on the island. Just make sure that you won't be put on a boat with cruise ship divers!

Where are you considering staying on GC? The Seven Mile Beach area is the most popular but it is the most developed and expensive but the beach is gorgeous. If you look at properties on 7MB, keep in mind that some of them charge a daily resort fee.

There are places north of 7MB on the west side of the island, and on the South, East, and North ends that are much less developed and less pricey, but you will need to rent a car and drive on the left, but rental cars are usually a bargain on GC.

Divetech. They have a perfect setup for shore entry and can provide us with doubles. We are looking at staying at a couple of inexpensive places very close to Lighthouse Reef and 10 mins from the shop. They offer 2 advanced unguided dives in the morning and we can shore dive in the afternoon. Unlimited. Miles are the same as Roatan but, although the 2 places are about the same distance from here, the travel time is half as long getting there.
It will end up being a little more expensive than Roatan but we won't have to deal with being led by the hand on boat dives and we get the shore diving and tech support we'd like.

Yeup, that's a pretty good assessment of the average Alaskan diver. We dive here year round in drysuits. So when we get the chance to go to a warm climate we dive our assess off

I don't consider being dropped off in front of the resort a boat dive. CCV gives you:

• 2 boat dive trips daily, each trip including 1 tank at the selected site and an optional drop-off dive on return to the resort, for up to 4 tanks daily from the boat. *Optional all-day and remote destination trips may be offered during the week at an additional cost.

I think people should really consider whether they are in the "special" group which would pay $1,199 per couple for that service. As with many diving related expenses, it's hard to admit mediocrity but it's easier on the pocket book!

For us currently, we wouldn't pay the extra money for CCV considering we would only do 2, maybe 3, dives a day, and we're not much interested in shore dives at the moment. If in the future our dive preferences change, we'd definitely be open to paying more for what we want!

Usually I try to stay on topic, but since this thread has swerved pretty wildly, I'll reflect on your comment. If you're talking Roatan, what you currently desire for dive profiles is available from West End day-dive ops and guest houses, quite reasonably. It's the $ math winner for anything less than 12 dives a week. Use a search here on SB for lots of info.

So you think you don't like shore diving...yet?

I think I could hook you on CCV's shore dive. It's fun to do super shallow, we regularly log two hour bottom times, the intact 140 long shipwreck is in 35fsw, next to the DC3 airplane, and the entry is like walking into your front yard....maybe that's how it got its name.

After 8pm it becomes an easily navigated night dive. Lots of landmarks. We do 5 night dives each week...no booking in advance or extra fees.

But for now, look hard at the West End.

Doc, does CCV make an effort to group divers by experience level? I really appreciate dive ops doing that. But then again, maybe CCV doesn't draw the once-a-year type divers anyway.

At West End Divers, or maybe it was Coconut Tree, I recall diving with just the divemaster to some of the sites closer to shore (which is a lot of them). In other words, a private dive. I was too inexperienced back then to appreciate it, but that sort of customized/valet service is what I seek out nowadays.
