I was diving sunday 7/15/07 at CSSP and when I went to fill my tanks, Robert refused to fill them. At first he said that they had not been EDDY current tested until I showed him the certificate and sticker on the side of the tank. Then he just flat refused to fill them. He would not tell me why other than he wanted to rent me 2 more tanks from his stock. Has anyone else had similar problems out there?

I think you may find that happening not just with CSSP but other parks as well. They just simply do not want to take the risk. I just tried to take a few tanks to a hydro facility locally that refused to hydro them even though they were not the alloy in question. It's kind of a blanket refusal now for the 1972-1987 tanks. I have called Luxfer and they just keep saying that they don't know why some people will not fill them or hydro them. They act like there is no problem at all. I asked a supervisor to call me back and no return phone call was ever made. I give up. I am tired of explaining to customers that even if we do the Eddy test, get it Hydro'd or whatever hoop they want me to jump through you still may see a refusal at local parks to fill them. It's just not worth it to them. I have sold more new tanks this year than ever before. Steel tanks are the way to go.

Well, frankly, I don't think they even *sell* diesel, so it's no surprise.

Oh, wait. Maybe you should, I don't know, perhaps mention just what you're talking about? I'm assuming aluminum scuba cylinders, due to the comment about eddy current testing and this being ScubaBoard, but at the very least, could you specify the make, the hydros (original and current), and the last visual and eddy inspections? It'll make no difference in the outcome, but it's not a proper whine without specificity. :D
 
Hell I didn't even need to hear what kind, make, model, year etc. to know what he is talking about. It's the same old story...Luxfer 1972-1987. Lots of shops quit filling them a long time ago. We filled them until the hydro facility we use quit testing them. That was about 3 months ago.
 
Give us more info on the tank. Is it old? Is it stamped "sp6498" or "sp....."?

We currently have a Luxfer cylinder sitting in our service bay that defies EVERYTHING we get from Luxfer or the DOT........................

This is a Luxfer S80 with an original hydro date of 06/89. According to Luxfer, they stopped making S80 cylinders from 6451-T6 alloy in 01/88. The cylinder was picked up from the hydro station about three weeks ago. It passed the hydro test and passed the Visual Eddy (VE) test.

Prior to filling this cylinder, we did a visual inspection on the cylinder and found a crack in the threads at the neck. We sent the cylinder back to the hydro station and the FAILED the cylinder because the crack in the neck spanned 4 threads.

Now....according to Luxfer, this original hydro date indicates that it IS NOT made from 6451-T6; yet it has a rather severe neck crack, a problem only associated with 6351-T6 alloy. It passed hydro and visual eddy inspection on the first trip to the hydro station.

THIS is why many people refuse to fill these older cylinders. EVEN AFTER TESTING, you cannot be sure the cylinder is not damaged.

The type of failure associated with those older tanks is very scary... and to some places, just not worth the risk... also, having a sticker does not mean the person doing the test knew what they were doing... I don't know if I would fill one.....glad I don't have to make the choice. Keep in mind, older tanks could have been filled 1,000 times, or 20, there is no way of knowing..
 
OK first the HAT had nothing to do with the tank fill. My tank info is P321085LuxferP6A87 DOT 3AL3000-S80 Hydro date 9/05 EDDY 9/06 and Viz 9/06. Since no one is filling these now does anyone know the salvage weight for alumium since I have several of these tanks.

Let me get this straight: any luxfer al80 with an original hydro date between 1972 and 1987 could be dangerous and should be considered suspect?
