Looks like you're a little late shopping...

Actually, I don't think so. I have been watching this for awhile, and those low fares on the above graphs are all the "adventure travel" type of thing, with multiple stops through Timbuktu or wherever, and they dropped off the screen just recently for some reason. If you deleted those from consideration, then you were consistently left with Delta/Continental with nearly identical fares of about $780, and those haven't changed much for awhile. The notion that fares might start dropping about 4 months out is interesting, but again, somehow I don't think so. When you look at the seat maps of these flights, you find that they are already nearly full :shocked2:, and I am gonna have to move on this soon just to get aboard.:( I am considering all the weekends in September now, and that helps open up the planes a little, but... Ah, well. The game goes on.:D Woody

I have also been watching the fares going to Roatan for the last two weeks of Sept. from Raleigh/Durham NC. Last week it was going for $733 and has come down to about $690. I too have seen the prices drop about 4 months out in the past so we're just waiting and watching.

As far as the flight showing full or close to it, sometimes that not exactly the case even though it may appear that way. Sites like Expedia, Orbitz, etc. can buy a block of spaces on a carrier and it may make the seats look like they are taken while they aren't. I was checking the open seats last week for the Saturdays of the 18th and 25th on Delta out of Atlanta and they were pretty wide open.

OK maybe the cheap flights were the roundabouts. Beware shopping on airline sites as they'll track you shopping even if you clear cookies and bump the fares as you compare. Shop on an alternate site that will link you to the airline itinerary. I've seen times I could shop on Sidestep, link directly to Cont.com to purchase, but if I tried to setup on Cont.com - $100 more for the same flights.

FYI, it is now 3 mo out until our trip to Roatan from NYC. The airfares have not dropped. Except for the lower 2-3 stop fares that have been intermittent, the lowest price from NYC was $676 about a month ago. Don't hold your breath while you wait for prices to drop. As I indicated above, a huge proportion of our fare is going to fees and taxes. If this is really the case and the fees/taxes are fixed prices, then the airlines probably can't afford to drop the price much.

If only the Honduran government could figure out what all these taxes and fees are costing in terms of no show divers. Roatan is one of my favorite spots but the air fares just keep me away even though the overall cost is lower than some destinations. It just bugs me that the cost is so much higher than many other places similar or even further away. It reminds me of the crazy cost to get to Palau.

Its not just the home country, but the taxes charged by the US that have really gone up the last couple of years in the name of homeland security. The taxes for traveling to an arab country like Egypt are really crazy.
