Diveral:
Usually by having another diver jump on your head as you are bobbing on the surface. Or has anyone been conked on the head by the boat ladder while bobbing on the surface behind the boat? It hurts :shiner1: .

AL

no, most of us know we're supposed to be away from the boat once we enter, or we go to the anchor line which is no where near the ladder.

Well said, Terry (Web Monkey).
It is one thing when you have a lot of experience and choose to dive in a particular way to suit. Divers gaining experience like myself, are probable better off following a more conservative approach until that we reach that level.
For me personally, I usually dive in a small group, so we usually start our desent together. Even when it is just me and a buddy, I don't find it a big deal to wait a few secs on the surface to desend. I end up going down and enjoying myself anyway.
If at some point in the future it is suggested to me to do a 'hot drop', I guess I will follow my instints and do whats comfortable.

Bottom time begins when you leave the surface, it is that by the definition, if your cheating it by hanging around at 10 to 20 feet then oficially your busting your tables. If your running a computer then you can adjust perhaps more on the fly but even they best I can tell figure their time from the moment you leave the surface.

I don't plummet out of control, I don't have all the weight nor do I need it. This thing about people plummeting to their deaths due to weight is a bit weird. If y'all are plummeting, you got to much weight on. N

this happends more with wrecker who carry a lot tools. they become "dirt darts" if they do not add enough gas to there BC to counter the tools.

Walter and Nemrod,
Wanted to tell you what happened when I tried your ‘point’ yesterday. Boat dive, possible some air in BC, didn’t squish every last bit of air out when packed gear bag. Added some additional neoprene first try so I’m probably 2 - 4# overweighted by carrying 4# ditchable. Just simple giant step off boat platform and waited to see what happened. By golly you were right, no plummet. Rose up to being 1 - 2# overweighted (surface buoyancy check criteria) with no action on my part and totally manageable in low seas.

Thank you both for your time helping me to learn as well as gain confidence in my ability to work out gear configurations.
Diverblam, thanks too for the original questions, and best wishes on that dive career!
