BUt on a more dramatic not...my old scuba pro computer did the same thing and then lost all of its memory so I got rid of it and bought a new comp!
 
I has some funky stuff happen when changing the battery but overall I'm ok with the VR3. I use the 3.6v batteries. The manual has some explicit instructions on how to change the battery.

No issues. I love my vr3. Use it from simple ocean dives to 300'+ CCR dives. Gotten me through all sorts of dives and emergency dive plan changes. If you are having issues with it contact the company they are usually pretty responsive.
