LukeRob do you think that i would be able to get some descent shots just by adding the wide angle lens?

PhotoTJ:
I've played with both, they seem identical, but I did not do a comprehensive focus test. I'll check it out on Tuesday, when I can get my hands on both cameras.
Any results yet? - Yes, my $$$ is burning a hole in my pocket.

Thanks

Charlie

I think the Wide Angle helps a lot. Without a strobe you will have to shoot natural light as the internal one is slightly blocked. Manual White balance will be the key.

With a strobe, I am really loving the wide angle. It allows for much more creativity with images, I love critters but the close focus wide angle really goes down well with everyone, even non-divers. It gives a context and environment in which the subject lives.

I think the WA is harder to shoot with in an exposure and compositional sense, but worth the effort. Focus becomes almost a non-issue with it though as it has amazing depth of field even at wide apertures. IMHO you will get decent shoots with a little practice.

Luke...thanks so much for that info. you've been a great help. I did order the wide angle and hopefully when i take my trip to the Bahamas i get some descent shots..at least i'll try.

Cool. Make sure you share some of the shots when you get back.
Good Luck.

I m considering OLY C770 too,

understand that their spec is of diff category,
but still need advise on pro and con of OLY770 and Can A85.

Which pic quality is better? (not in terms of resolution / optional zoom)

Which batt can last longer?

Any others?

thank u.

I haven't used the oly but I can definatly tell you that the A85 batteries will last a lot longer - over 3hrs (I dived three dives over 70 minutes in a day and still didn't run out, recharged after this so they could probably have lasted longer) with LCD on constantly and taking shots with flash.

Pic quailty you will have to decide but look at my gallery to see what the A70 can do (the model below A85 same camera but 1 less megapixel) in terms of pic quailty.

Otherwise the Oly is a much bigger camera and housing package, a bit more info on what you would like to do with the camera would be good and how and what diving you do. Any idea of what land stuff you will use it for.

will be more for land leisure use, will demand a excellent pic quality from the camera

as for underwater, i don't think i will have more than 2 dive trips a year, therefore not really important to have excellent pic but at least some decent photo (hate those from shoot and dispose underwater camera )

The camera is just a wrench. Pic quality, by and large, is a function of the mechanic.

Sorry, this went in the wrong thread - finger trouble from a new user!

I have the A75 and I like it a lot.
You can see examples on my website, with and without flash (I just use the internal flash as I don't yet have an external strobe)

I like the camera and I chose it over the A80/A85 because it will do 30sec video clips at DVD resolution, which the others will not (only VHS res).

The Scene setting for underwater works ok if you are in <5m otherwise there is no red to enhance anyway.

cheers,
Peter
