Hi all,

We are a family of four and all diving enthousiasts. My son-in-law wants to start diving. His left arm is missing below the elbow since birth, so we are investigating in choosing the right gear. A good friend of mine is a diving instructor and he will train and certify him, so we've already had some great tips. He assured us that full certification should not be an issue, so that is reassuring.

Main question we have is about the BCD. Most BCD's are equiped with the inflator on the left side, but depending on the brand and type it seems to be possible to swap them out. Our instructor friend also pointed tot the Scubapro i3+ system, but on researching this there seems to be a very heated discussion on the reliability. Furthermore, to my knowledge alle i3+ equiped BCD's have them on the left side and I have not found any indication it can be swapped to the right. Third option I read about, is not going for a classic BCD, but use a backplate and wing as there are wings that have the inflator connection in the middle, so it can be routed to either side. I am curious to see if there are any other solutions that we haven't thought of.

We will do a refresher and get our AOW this summer and parallel our son-in-law with go through his OW course. Looking forward very much to introduce him into the world of diving. If it all works out we will take them diving next year, most likely Egypt.

Any tips or resource are greatly appreciated.

A standard left side BC inflator can be operated with the right hand. Might take some more practice and maybe a longer hose but it should not be an issue.

Stay away from the i3.

BP&W then simply move the inflator over. You will need to find one with two dump valves but that isn't difficult.

The dude with one arm is going to do a better job than most with two

So avoid fixing anything, buy a bc with a shoulder dump nothing to fix
