Well I finished up for an IANTD Adv. Nitrox course a few months ago... but my instructor ran it like a little mini DIR-F/ tech intro course. My course was done in two locations. Locally, we did pool sessions to 1) familiarize myself with a doubles setup, long hose, etc... 2) buoyancy control and 3) lots of time on finning techniques. Overseas, he worked us hard and had us surface swim a good distance every morning. Even underwater, he had us spend a lot time swimming around at a good pace and against some stiff currents, refreshing navigational skills, and practice GUE style deep stops (we profiling our dives based on GUE's decoplanner). We did OOA drills, DSMB drills, practice dropping deco tanks, clipping them back on, valve drills, and even had our masked ripped off while doing air shares. And as this was in the Philippines, we got to enjoy some nice coral, shark caves, and a variety of fish. I even had a triggerfish attack my tanks...

do you know what you have to have to qualify? (ie. # of dives, equipment, divemaster)

This depends on the organization. For IANTD - if I remember well you have to be AOWD, have basic nitrox and I think 25 or 50 dives including some number done at the minimum depth of 30 meters.
Mania
PS. BTW during my Adv. Nitrox we did all that is required in DIR F (also the theory - deep stops, minimum deco, ratio deco, dive and gas planning, runtimes, deco programs (Deco Planer, GAP and others), M-Values, gradients and so on) with only one exception - working in teams of 3 divers - we had 2 divers' teams.
