If the shop sucks the shop sucks. It doesn't matter they're fixing prices or not. If the shop is simply a place to exchange money for gear they're not going to do well. Just because you and James haven't found any good shops in your repective neck of the woods doesn't mean they don't exist and it certainly isn't justification to make a blanket statement that all shops are evil.
 
I'm debating on not reopening my shop even though I will be a course director come Jan. 15. I've got sales reps all over the place asking me to try to go into partners with the other dive shop, so I have NO idea what's going on over that way besides ownership change. I think the old owner had deep pockets and the sales reps liked it and now the new owner doesn't. To bad for the reps. I want star 5 pricing or nothing at all from you!

I may just pull a Mike F. Keep some smaller lines and run my compressor out of my mini-barn. Piss on the manufacturers. There's only one or two reps I like anyway.

Not to mention there are a bunch of customers I've given excellent service too and would now love to give a big fat BIRD too. You know who you are.
