I use the knob all the time to prevent accidental free flow on the surface, then adjust to a nice breathing effort underwater. Works great. My regulator is an Aqualung Micron by the way

@idocsteve: Please refer to your reg manual for the specifics on how/when to use the Venturi lever. Setting the Venturi lever to "+" usually deflects the flow of gas so that, once flow is initiated, it makes it easier to sustain that flow. Setting the Venturi lever to "-" simply changes the angle of deflection of the flow of the gas. AFAIK, the Venturi lever is not the same as an "open/close" or "on/off" switch. But, then again, I have no experience at all with Beuchat regs.

That makes sense.

I get the feeling what you say applies to my reg too.

All I know is the way I got it right now is full open and it doesn't free flow, and I breathe ok. I recall my LDS owner (and reg technician) explained to keep the level full back, and it's easy to remember because that's the direction the air goes when you breathe, and move it forward only to avoid freeflow.

I usually only have to use the "de-tune" knob (it's an Atomic, the venturi control is automatic) when I need to take the 2nd out of my mouth at depth to fill an SMB or switch to the back-up to make sure it still works (surface checks are great, but. . .). Otherwise it's just left wide open. I also make sure it's still working fine with no crud caught in it when I'm rinsing the reg.:D
