Search under way for diver missing in Manuka Bay for hours

The person was one of two people diving at the bay in Canterbury, police say.

Police and Search and Rescue teams are searching for a missing diver in Manuka Bay in Domett, Hurunui, in the South Island.

Police said the person was one of two people diving at the bay in Canterbury, in water about 5 metres deep.

Police were called about 2.15pm on Monday. A helicopter had helped with the search but there had been no sign of the missing person, police said.

The Police Dive Squad had been alerted and is expected to join the search for the diver in the morning, police said.

Support is being provided to the diver’s family.

Police find body while looking for diver who went missing at Manuka Beach​

The Police National Dive Squad has recovered a body during the search for a man who went missing while snorkelling for crayfish at Manuka Beach, Domett, in north Canterbury.

At 2pm on Monday, a 52-year-old local man failed to return to shore. That day, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter looked for the man and Police scoured the shoreline.

On Tuesday morning, the Police dive squad began to water search with by Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

About 3pm, searchers found a body under the water.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Local iwi have placed a rāhui on the northern end of Manuka Beach for a period of one week.
