Once a dive master are you always a dive master? Should you have to renew with an agency(other than for insurance reasons)?
Just asking the question so please don't chew my head off.

I'm a Naui DM, and we have to renew every year. We also have to make "x" number of dives, help teach with "x" number of classes, and do something else, but I forget what it is off the top of my head. If we don't do these things, our status is denied, but I'm not sure if its revoked as far as having to go through the training again.

P.S. There are other things we can do to maintain status, but I forget what those are too...I know if I dig a little I can find it. Nuts to that

I don't dive all the time and was thinking of working in the general direction of DM - probably Rescue Diver next time and a specialty or two.

As I understand the PADI regs, my DM status is not revoked if I fail to renew. However, I am not considered to be in good standing (or some such language) and cannot work with students or supervise divers.

sounds right, I have been a non working non insured padi divemaster for a year and am now required to renew my DM with padi for about 80$ which i wont be doing as I am not going to be working. I dont think padi requires anything other than the yearly dues to stay active.

Aww... come on... You know you want to though. Don't you?

And it's soooo easy! 1 (800) PAY-PADI and a credit card is all you need.... ;) ;) ;) ;)

We all know that PADI is a business, so no one is really surprised by their wanting a yearly membership! But that's all?!?! You get DM or instructor and it's just pay a bit and you can assist or teach?! No return to instructing course? Hmmm...

I learn something new everyday... :) No one ever told me being a divemaster had a yearly renewal fee. And I start my divemaster sessions next week.

So what else is required of a divemaster? I know for a fact that a divemaster should have his own flag and float. There's this one guy who actually lost his DM status just because he didn't dive with a float and flag.

EBdiver once bubbled...

Where was this, and who "took away" his DM status?

norcaldiver, I'll have to get back to you on that. My instructor was the one who told me about this.
