Is there a trick to getting to the motor in the Bauer VT7 cage for inspection/maintenance? I saw some bolts that hold the compressor to the frame above it, but unfortunately it seems to be attached to the motor by what I assume functions as a gravity belt tensioner so no joy there.
 
Yea pretty much, no joy...
You will need to lift the weight of the motor off the belt, remove belt from motor pulley and be ready for it to swing down. The belt is the only thing "lifting" the motor and the base it is bolted to. Weight of the motor is the tension. With belt off, you can check bearings. If you need to remove the motor entirely, then you must remove the electrical connections first. Build a resting platform with scrap 2x4's to roll or slide motor off the base.
So be sure you really need to do this first...
