It is a decent wing, I've never dived one personally however have seen them in use on buddies. Aside from the fact that Abyss is no longer in business, which actually effects the performance of the wing not at all, it's a 55 lb wing at a decent price. If you need one, it will likely work fine. Dunno if the corregated hose may seem too long to you - if so, put a shorter one one, problem solved.

Anybody know anything about this ABYSS 55lb dual tank wing? Looks like a good price but I don't want to get stuck with something I won't be happy with in the long run.

thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, Just wanted to say that while I can't speak to the quality of that particular wing, Vir. Scuba seems to be a good place to do business with on the web. I purchased an Abyss BP/Harness from them last week...it was the last one they had apparently. Like you, I was attracted to the price---at least half of what I would have paid for just about any other brand. It arrived in a few days and was just as I expected. The way I saw it I was buying a piece of metal and some nylon webbing, not something I had to worry about having a company guarantee on. I was hoping they had a wing for it, but since I will be diving a single, 55 lbs. was waaaaay more than I will be needing, so I guess I left it for you!

abyss is supposed to reopen jan 1 from what i have seen.

I have the same wing, but I haven't dove it yet. It was kind of an impulse buy when abyss was going out of business and the price was too good to pass up (~$180). It appears to be well made and I may decide to get it wet at some point. I was thinking that I may use it when I make the switch to doubles and dive wet.

I bought a ton of stuff from Abyss when Chris liquidated his inventory, and now I kinda wish I had bought a few more tons. I got my wife the 30-pound wing, and she likes it a lot. One thing is that there is an inner bladder in a nylon outer shell.
This holds a lot of water when you first get out, but it also protects the bladder.
My main rig is the Oxycheq wing, and last year, some bozo managed to puncture it. This would not have happened with the Abyss wing.
Plus, on stuff like a wing or the powder-coated backplates, what really can go wrong?

I know a little bit about it since I was the principal designer of them when I was at Abyss. The wing is made as a dual bag design meaning it has an inner bladder and outter shell. The innerblader is a urethane backed nylon rafting material designed for high durability. It's also in bright orange s should the outter bag get a cut you will see it right away. The outter bag is a high durability nylon as well which will resist cuts and punctures. The wing is a slightly different design that the standard "flat wing" in that this wing will wrap around the profile of the cylinders when inflated and will not push up against your back. This is especialy important while on the surface because it allows you to get out of the system even with the wing fully inflated.

The inflators have "no-dump" elbows on them and have well made inflators that can take up to 200 psi ip -- this prevents the inflators from possibly filling from a failing regulator. The wings also have pull dumps on the bottom for ease of trim should you get "butt up" You will also find 3 grommets for positioning the wing on doubles plus a slide slot at the bottom for making mounting easy when bolts are not exactly 11 inches apart.

We designed the wings in 2000 and refined them in 2001, 2002, and 2003.

I have been diving these wings for years and will continue to since they are so well made. We manufactured them in the USA at the same factory that makes wings for most of the popular manufacturers.

We still have some inventory of those products and as always at Tech Diving Limited we stand behind everything we sell even if the company is no longer around (Abyss Dive Systems) I also expect to release a new series of wings sometime in the spring based on this original design.

If you have more questions on this item feel free to ping on me.

Regards,
