The Explorers are just Kirby-Morgan seconds - the firsts are Poesidons. Good regs, but Abyss wants too much for them. I'm trying to find a source for the KM seconds at a reasonable cost - rumor has it that the METAL KM seconds can be had at their LIST (retail!) price of about $200 each!

If/when I find them at a reasonable price, I'd try one. At well over $300 for the second alone..... I dunno....

You won't find a source for the Kirby Morgan's second unless you purchase them at Abyss.. They have some agreement with them to sell to the rec/tek dive market while Kirby sells to the commercial accounts.. They do make what is called an Adventurer regulator and Chris at Abyss said they just did some testing and it breathes really close to the Explorer series.. I have one and for the price its a steal... Since it comes out of the same factory as a Scuba Pro model but at a much lower price...

Also I would just purchase the plastic version.. I've dive both and liked the plastic second stage a alot more.. Just my two cents...

Thanks for the replies.. I was thinking I was the only diver out here with there dive gear!! These guys have some great gear but just aren't getting out to the public very well..

Is the airtube metal?

All-plastic seconds bite. I can't deal with them; they cause HORRIBLE cottonmouth problems for me. I sold my S600 (which I otherwise loved) due to this.

If the Explorer has a metal airtube it might be worth a crack... I could try one and see how I like it.

There's a commercial dive shop near me where I can walk in and buy Kirby-Morgan gear any old time. Well, maybe they won't sell me a helmet. (In fact KM is based in the same city, Santa Barbara). If there's such a thing near you give them a try.

I purchased a brand new 2nd in shrink wrap and all for 120 from Kirby Morgan over the phone. Sure beats Chris's price of 275 for the second...and I like the KM symbol better any way...

Not true... I called and KM sent a second out just last summer. 120 sure beat 275.

Ok, I'll eat my shorts.. When I'm wrong I have no problem saying so.. It does surprise me that KM is doing that??? I'm going to see Chris today for a superbowl party and will speak with him about everones comments... I happen to live in the same city as the company is and live only four houses from Chris..

If any of you come up with a good source (phone number, etc) for the seconds please PM me.

Chris @ Abyss has said that they're out of stock until MAY with him.

They look great. Would love some feedback before I order.

Thanks.

Dale,
The Abyss wings and backplate will work with any other manufacturer out there. The question you need to answer is are you going to dive single or dual cylinders? Do you dive with a drysuit or wetsuit and what type of diving are you planning on doing? Cave, wreck, quarry, warm or cold water... so on....

These wings are well balanced so that you don't have air shifting from one side to the other.. This is a big deal if you don't have alot of experence.. There are internal compression bands which keep the wing balance.. I know since I helped design the product so if you have any questions you may contact Chris at Abyss or email me with any questions..

Well I finaly got around to diving the 45 pound wing with a single tank. I just went out my front door and hit the reef just off shore :54: It's hard to make the time when I am cave diving everyday.

Anyway I dont think it is any problem with a single tank compared to the 45 pound wing. I did take the thing off in 20 feet of water and have a good look at it, also I took a self portrait (not very good) so you can see for yourself.

The thing is, a 45 pound wing will work, but would be a little sloppy compared to the 30.

So the first picture is on a tank fully inflated
