Hi,
Just wondering whether anyone had any opinions on the Abyss backplates and wings. Looking at getting into this sort of gear, and LDS sells this. Wondering how it would compare to say Halcyon, etc... And whether their bp would fit with say the Halcyon donut shaped wing, I gather it's the pioneer? Also hopefully will get into the DIR-F at some point in the not so distant future, so I don't see any reason why this would not work, but then I know nothing:rolleyes: . So basically are there any issues with this gear. From an aesthetic perspective, they've got funky colours, but I think I like the Halcyon wings.
Any help here would be great.
Thanks
Eric

Let me start of my saying I like Abysmal. Chris is really great guy. I have bought lots though him.

I was using the Rec2Tec setup (BP Wing and harness-similar to the OMS IQ) until this summer. I have replaced it with the Halcyon Pioneer and BP. I was not overly impressed with it. I felt the wing trapped too much air and is bulky. My advice is to go with the Halcyon.

If your still interessted I have one for sale real cheep!!! Its going to eBay (once I get some photo's taken of it).

If you have specific questions feel free to PM me.
Christopher

Thanks for the insight, I'm probably not going to be seriously looking at anything until next summer/spring, just curious now, trying to find out about this stuff, obviously heard lots of stuff about Halcyon from the board, and beyond knowing very little, I like what I see. I just have never heard anything about Abyss gear, either good or bad. I try not to think about how much I spent on gear the first time round, and although its mostly pretty good stuff I think, it still makes me want to cry. I like modular, and I like minimalist, I don't deal so well with clutter:)

I've been reading in this forum for sometime now and have seen many of the high end manufacturers of Bc's / wings except one? Abyss Dive Systems?? I've been diving these wings for over 2 years now and feel they produce a very good product that stacks up with the other manufacturers.. What I really like is that if you are a dive instructor, master, work at a dive shop or just really want to try one of their systems Chris ( the owner ) will give you a discount!!!
So I guess I'm asking am I the only tek diver out there with their bc / wing system and what am I missing??? www.Abyss.biz is their website... I'm looking for positive feedback and what you guys out their think...
I hope to add positive feedback in this forum...

I have one of their 55lb wings and like it a lot for doubles. The shape is IMHO "better" than the others on the market. It trims beautifully and does not trap air.

Some people will garf about the dual OPVs and balls on the end of the pulls, but that's a Kool-Aid argument. I find nothing wrong with either, and frankly, if you're inverted for some reason (intentionally) having both pulls is nice as you can dump from both sides equally - impossible without OPVs on BOTH sides.

Yeah, I know, some people think you should always be horizontal. Uh huh. And how do I reach into that vertical hole to get that lobster while doing that? :D

I also use Abyss gear. I have a 30# wing, a 45# wing (which I have used with twin E8-130's and a dry suit), the explorer series as well as the adventure series regulators and their harness system. I also dive with Diverite equipment and find the Abyss just as good if not better.

Their Explorer regs are the easiest breathing reg I have ever used.

I did take the Yellow balls of death :) of off the pull dumps though. Maybe if I was using the wings with gloves on I would leave them on.

If you are ever in Mexico and dont believe me about the reg, give me a shout and I will loan you one to try.

The Explorers are just Kirby-Morgan seconds - the firsts are Poesidons. Good regs, but Abyss wants too much for them. I'm trying to find a source for the KM seconds at a reasonable cost - rumor has it that the METAL KM seconds can be had at their LIST (retail!) price of about $200 each!

If/when I find them at a reasonable price, I'd try one. At well over $300 for the second alone..... I dunno....

You mention that they are "just Kirby-Morgan" and the "firsts are Poesidons." *Just* Kirby Morgans, thats right, nothing but top quality.

I don't know many people that need the full metal reg. The plastic one, which does very well for me being draged around the jungle and hap-hazardly thrown into the back of my truck does just fine and it's only MSRP $222.00. That's the cost of perfection :D.

I'm interested in the metal body primarily as a defense against drymouth. I find that the G250, for instance, which has a metal air tube, is a LOT more comfortable to breathe than the S600, even though the S600 has better "performance."

Does the plastic body model have a metal airtube?

I recently purchased an Abyss 55# wing and Rec2Tec pack, very, very nice! Top quality. I plan on buying their regs as well soon.
