I have a problem with my knee, last year my knee was rotationed 45degree and now ı cant do something in my life.. (for exaple, I cant walk uphill or stairs etc..) if ı dive with scuba, is it bad for my knee? (because of weights and tanks or use fins? ) :06:

Fins generate extra power by providing our legs with leverage against the water- this extra leverage is transfered directly through the knees. Also, walking on a rocking boat, with our without the added weight of gear, is a real test of foot placement and knee stability. If you're not on a boat, you are still likely to use steps, a ladder, or a grade of some type to enter and exit the water.

If you wanted to test this, just take your fins to a pool and see if you can fin around casually. If that works, do a few kickboard laps. Then climb the ladder to get out.

I don't know about Turkey, but all the diving I do involves walking uphill, walking up steps, or climbing ladders. I suppose if you were doing nothing but boat diving, and always took your gear off in the water, then all you'd have to do is carry your own weight up the ladder, but you'd still have to do that.

If you have an anterior cruciate ligament injury (which sounds like from a planted rotation injury), they are fairly easy and routine to repair.

I blew my acl and mcl, and had a major tear in my cartilage 4 years ago from playing rugby. I was fine when I did my open water cert later that year, but I went through an intense rehab program for my knee. Having said that I wouldn't suggest going diving until you get the surgery done. Although each person is different, I know after blowing out my knee, I was not even able to walk for a week, and then when I could walk it would just give out every now and then. Now if you apply that to scuba diving and your on a boat in choppy water or even a mild swell and your not stable on your feet and you rotate you can possibly injury yourself more seriously.

Like I said though, ever person is differnent and only you can make the decision on whether your knee is fine for diving, and judging from your post, I think you already know the answer to that.

Hope that helped shed a buit of light on your situation.

yea aaen, ı had rehab program, but it's still the same.. ı think ı must get the surgery like u said :( ı havent got any problem when ım diving but when diving is done it becomes to hurt. ı thought, because of fins, so maybe ı should learn to use the right fins..

TSandM,mostly not walking uphill here but probably its bad for me too again :(
thank you very much to all for your suggestions

Again, another topic with good replys and advice! I love ScubaBoard! haha

At the end, only you can decide. If you feel you are good, be safe. But be carfull. Make sure your buddy knows whats going on too! (and dont assume he/she knows, or knows the extent of it all! for safe meauser!)

Im sure there are people willing to help with things they can help with. Removal of weights or gear getting in out of water and stuff like that.

Again, your call.

Best of luck!

I blew out my ACL last September and had surgery in October. I felt fairly fine after the initial trauma but was concerned about long-term effects from the lack of stability so I opted for ACL reconstruction with an autograft. My first time on scuba was in a pool in January (I wore a dry suit with a brace underneath). For various reasons (scheduling and teaching), I haven't actually made it to the big blue ocean yet.

The surgery and rehab was more difficult than I imagined it and it has kept me out of the water longer than I expected (although I am well within the schedule predicted by my ortho who is also a diver). So, only you can make the decision whether to do the surgery or not. One of the long-term risks of no surgery, as I understand it, is arthritis caused by lack of stability that results in possible need for knee replacement. I did not want to accept that risk.

I'm not a Dr. and this is not intended to be medical advice. As always, YMMV.

You may want to try smaller, softer fins. Less strain on the knees, but not as efficient.

For boat diving, inflate your BC, put it over the side and get into it in the water.

amphibic, if you can use a cart to haul your gear around, and find a way to
get geared up in the water, you could probably do it

or you can get your buddies to haul your gear, etc.

but i would definetely be very careful about trying to do it like everybody else
does (haul the stuff onto your back and start walking)
