I was searching Leisure Pro's website and they have very inexpensive new scuba gear. Has anybody had any problems ordering from them? And there are so many name brands, boy o boy how do I tell the good from the bad? Also (as you can tell I'm a new diver with lots of ?'s, that's why I'm asking before I purchase) on the page for the regulators it says: 1st Stage Type: Diaphragm, LP Port: 5 & HP Port: 2. Please let me know what each of those mean. Thank you!!

Simple, read this board, rent gear until you know yourself what is good, and then buy. Every person out there will tell you different story............ Like I will tell you to buy APEKS, and you'll realize that I was right after you did the above.

If you ask for help and take up a lot of the shop owner's time, please buy from the LDS. Otherwise, that's just rude. For regulators, I would buy from someplace that I know will take care of me.

If you would like to buy from LeisurePro (they do have great prices), and have questions on their products, please call them up. They have a sales staff that can answer your questions.

Here are some threads on LeisurePro:
- The great big, all-inclusive Leisure Pro note
- Is leisurepro.com the best place to buy?

Besides, LeisurePro, there are many other online vendors that are knowledgable and helpful. ScubaToys is prime example, plus Larry frequents this board and is very helpful.

As for regulators, and what it all means, here are some references:

Jess,

I agree, go to your LDS and get as much information you can on what the different parts of the equipment are, what they do and the benefits of these features. They (LDS) should be willing to help you choose the best equipment for where and how you are going to dive. If they are reluctant to explain the equipment too you and seem to be pushing you to buy it just because they have it in thier shop, find another shop.

A good way to think of things (at least for me) is to compare them types of cars. You can buy everything from an economy car to a truck or a sports car. So determine your needs and then find the equipment that meets those needs. After all there is no need to buy a Cadillac if a Chevrolet will do.

Now that being said, somebody is going to chime in and say that you should get the best equipment money can buy because your life depends on it. And to a point I agree with this. Although, if properly treated and maintained most equipment should be fine for most divers.

One last thing to consider is what your future needs may be. If you plan on taking a Nitrox course or plan on doing any type of tech diving then these are additional considerations to take into account.

Either way, if you are like most divers your first set of equipment will not be your last. As you gain experiance you will discover the things that work best for you and start to taylor your equipment to those needs.

Jeanne425 was that a troll or are you really that much of a #@*%#? Please don't give advice like that. Do you know anything about what your talking about?

To the original poster- If your going to use the services of a dive shop then make your purchases there. If you choose to do business with LP then get your info from them.
And feel free to spread your purchases around between everyone.

Scubaboard is a great place to get a lot of different opininons and viewpoints, you 'll have to sort out whose opinion you'll trust and whose you should ignore such as Jeanne425-M

I bought a package deal from leisure pro, the warranty is kind of confusing, but when my computer had a problem, they did give me a new one. I saved over $1500 buying from them, vs my lds. I have paid my lds for training for myself and 1 employee, plus 4 tanks. If the lds can't compete, somethings wrong. I would shop around, this stuff is expensive!!!

Search the Web and other directories. Get some toll free phone numbers, then. Start making lots of calls and asking lots questions. i.e. What do they recommend and why? Where do they dive and what do they use and why. Be patient, let the seller educate you. The final decision should be yours. Price should not be your only concern. Since I sell gear through a dive shop my opinion of leisure pro will be kept to myself.

To be honest, I don't see what's wrong with her advice? If you can find it cheaper online, then go for it. SCUBA is expensive, it ain't cheap. If you find it cheaper elsewhere - (i.e. we found dive computers that have worked just dandy from eBay).. then go for it.

As you say, you can spread your purchases out.. we buy from one local shop and we'll probably continue - but we'll get air from almost anywhere - and I won't go out of my way to purchase other stuff from shops I do get air. Why show loyalty to shops that just hike up the prices and at times have inexperienced staff that have no clue on what they're talking about (generalization here)? I'm not against supporting local dive shops, but I don't see why you can't purchase elsewhere if the price is right.

LP Port 5 means 5 ports on the low pressure side of the 1st stage

HP Port 2 means 2 ports on the high pressure side of the 1st stage

Ports would be the equivilant of the "hole" you thread hoses or accessorys into.
