ever thought that when we use all those different abbrevations we use in this forum many newcomers have NO idea what they mean... so lets start a list of sum of the most commonly used abbreviations here goes..

OW-open water
AOW-advanced open water
LDS-- local dive shop
DIR-Do it right

OOA - out of air
DIY - do it yourself
octo - octopus/alternate 2nd stage
MOD - maximum operating depth
END - end narcotic depth
RNT - residual nitrogen time
ABT - actual bottom time
TBT - total bottom time
PADI - profesional association of diving instructors
SSI - scuba schools international
ACUC - american and canadian underwater certification
TDI - technical diving international
SDI - scuba diving international
IANTD - international association of nitrox and technical divers
TOX or OX TOX - Oxygen toxicity
SMB - surface marker buoy
SPG - submersible pressure guage
STROKE - someone who does not folloe the strict dictum of DIR
AGE - arterial gas embolism
surd02 - surface decompression on 02
deco - decompression
LDS - local dive shop


these are just a few I can think of off the top of my head....we ues almost as many abreviations as the armed forces
