Hey guys,

So I'm looking to get a wing setup... I currently dive with a single tank but I plan to start diving doubles this summer. Ideally I was looking into an OMS single bladder wing with 45 lbs of lift. I know it may be a bit much for a single but I think it would be the closest I could get to a hybrid wing... If not I would need to get one of the 32lb wings and I dont think I could use that wing for doubles. Is 45 lbs too big to use on a single?

Any other suggestions? Does a hybrid wing even exist or will I need two?

Thanks!

I was also looking into the Dive Rite Rec EXP Wing...

Would the dive rite or the OMS 45lb be too big for a single tank, honestly? I dont mind if it wraps around a little just nothing too bad...

Singles wings and doubles wings differ in both shape and lift capacity.

The ideal shape for doubles is not the ideal shape for singles.

"Dual Purpose" wings exist, but they aren't great singles wings.

BP&W's offer many advantages, using dual purpose wings will negate some of the most important of these advantages.

The transition to doubles is expensive; couple sets of doubles @ $600-1000 each, 5 regs (doubles, deco, argon etc.) Drysuit, Can light, training, gas etc. etc. etc.

Trying to save ~$300 on a dual purpose wing is a drop in the bucket.

As said by CH52, you are trying to save a "few" bucks now, which you will end up regretting down the road.

You could get 2 HOG wings at a pretty decent price.

Plan to purchase two wings; a single wing and a double wing. Trying to use one for both purposes is just not smart. A weird hybrid wing will create issues.

But, all the wings I own I bought used. They've worked great. You needn't buy everything new all at once.

One thing at a time - but the right thing each time.

That is some sound advice. Thanks!

Now that I have that out of the way tho, I would need some advice on a good wing for a single tank. This is my first BP/W setup... I dive with an AL 80 and a 14mm wetsuit...

Learn from my mistake and just buy separate singles and doubles wings. Don't go overboard on lift capacity, and buy one that's the right shape. Tobin's DSS wings are supposed to be great, as are Oxycheq Mach V's, Agirs, and of course the one everyone loves to hate on because they're so expensive, Halcyon.

Combination singles/doubles wings seem to always trap air and make it very difficult to avoid the occasional runaway ascent (never hit the surface in mine but definitely had some 10' pop-ups before regaining control, and that always really got in the way of enjoying the dive).

With an Al80 in cold water, you're going to need at least 30 lbs of lift. You could consider the DSS 30lb horseshoe wing as part of the singles setup . . . cool_hardware52, whose advice you liked, owns Deep Sea Supply, and they make very good quality backplate setups.

With a buoyant suit and buoyant tanks you will benefit from a Stainless Plate.

The proper size plate is function of your height.

Required wing lift is primarily a function of the buoyancy of your exposure suit. You can either test your suit, or we can estimate it's buoyancy based on your current configuration.
