We've been to Roatan and enjoyed the large resort experience with all the amenities and larger boats. But for our next trip, we'd like to stay at a much smaller resort that's not too expensive.

We're looking for somewhere on the water, no bar or night life necessary, for a family of 3 divers wanting to dive, eat, sleep. We'd appreciate smaller boats, and of course clean beds and great diving. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Have you considered Bonaire? If you get a more reasonably priced airfare you can stay at a place light the Golden Reef Inn for an reasonable price.

My wife daughter and I are staying at the Golden Reef Inn for one week this summer. The accommodations are a two room villa and the price is reasonable and it is located in a residential neighborhood.

It might be something worth checking into since it seems to meet your criteria.

This is our first trip to Bonaire but the shore diving is world renowned according to every dive magazine I have read and according to the posts I have read here on ScubaBoard.

Yes, we were in Bonaire last year........and stayed at Golden Reef!
We'd like to return to Roatan this fall.

You should look at the Inn of Last Resort.

One of the posters here "I think" HowieDean works there!

It's on the north side close to the west end.

Do some searches there are several trip reports.

Cow... (or is it Dog?), well- Cowdog!

You picked our brains here extensively before you did that trip you mention to Roatan.

And you haven't said "boo" since then as to how it went or a trip report. :no

Well?

Define what you want in a "resort". If you are looking for Roatan and just want a hotel room, there's lots of small places in the West End. Search on West End here for recommendations and trip reports.

Doc....since you hang out with us Texans you need to know some Texan stuff;) ...a cowdog is a dog that is very smart by nature and helps the cowboys/cowgirls herd the cattle they can be in more places around the herd quicker than a person on a horse.....:D

It's clear that the Reef House, at the end of the paved road in Oak Ridge, is your destination. We're going back in June for our 2nd visit in 2 years. Twelve rooms, three meals, three dives a day (plus one night dive), unlimited shore diving, cheap beer and wine, eat and BS with the owners, great divemaster, small groups, everything you want. Go check out www.reefhouseresort.com .

Now, having said all the above, don't go expecting something fancy. It is not. It's basic, clean, comfortable, friendly, and intimate. When we checked out last year, Larry, the owner, asked when we'd be back. I told him that we were just getting used to being able to travel and dive, and the world had too many places to go to say when, or if, we'd be back. A year later (but with two other dive trips in between) we're going back. I wouldn't do it for just the diving. We really enjoyed the Reef House experience.
