I took my key down to the local hardware store and had a copy made. Cost a couple of bucks. I clip it in a pocket and don't worry if it gets wet or not. Since I always keep it in the pocket, it has saved me a couple of times when my truck got locked with my regulars still inside.

I have a electronic key i leave it the truck and lock the doors cause I also have a keypad on the truck so i just enter the code unlock my doors get he key start truck and leave. Side note even if you ahve a electronic key90% of the time you can get a copy that wont start the veichle but will open the door.

We've had problems with thieves in the Monterey/Carmel area and they know the usual tricks of hiding keys on tires, or in the gas cap door, and under the bumpers.

The safest way is to have an extra key cut and clip it to one of your d-rings or in your wetsuit/drysuit, then lock your keys inside of your car.

Also, every so often, make sure that all of the doors lock on your vehicle. Every once in awhile the door lock actuators fail, leaving one door that won't lock.

Yes, yes you have. And you've had those problems since at least 2000.

When I lived in Monterey we used to head down to the beach in Carmel all the time. My buddy had this crappy old Jeep Wagoneer, and this thing was crap, not one of the cool ones.

Anyway, he left the key in gas cap. The idea was that this is Carmel, there are some nice cars around, why would anyone steal his POS?

Well, we come back up from the beach (we we surfing that day) and spend a good 20 minutes looking for the truck before we realize that it sure isn't there. Standing in the Carmel Police Department lobby wearing nothing but a wetsuit for a few hours waiting for someone to come and pick us up was enough to teach us that lesson. Now the key stays on me wherever I go.

Oh, and they later found the truck, minus the two front seats on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Go Banana Slugs!!!

Like the hitch lock, on 90% of my local dives I stick them in the gas cap.A few places which are alittle sketchy I take a single door key and d ring it inside the pocket that has a ring in it.

In the ignition.

But I live in small-town Canada. Everyone obeys the rules here. (lol)

If I'm in a really public place I might throw them in a compartment in side the car, but I generally don't worry about it much at all. That's what insurance is for.

I use something similar to the small otter box mentioned above. I tie the otter box to the top of the float of my dive flag. I use a big lobster pot style float on my dive flag. Been doing it that way for years and years... works great... everything stays bone dry. Also store my fishing license & drivers license in there too.

Take it with in a Witz box around your neck. Mine hasn't leaked in over 5 years. LeisurePro has dozens of options - $4.95 & up.
