this is really pissing me off. you can't ask questions without being called a troll

bottom line is, i use stages on my RIGHT with a canister light, and it's ok

what difference would it make on the LEFT?

before you have a knee-jerk reaction

i was taught in DIR-F that the light went on the right hand, yet a DIR
guy not too far back here said it depends. it can be done left or right,
as the situation mandates.

so i asked the question about the canister light in case there is a similar
take on this

look at it from my point of view: i have been diving with stages on the right
and a canister light on the right and it hasn't been an issue. why would it
be an issue to switch that to the left?

I was inclined to agree with Jeff that the question he quoted was a troll. I now understand that there was some confusion and you honestly didn't know that moving the light can to the left side wasn't DIR.

You know, I don't understand the sniping that's going on here.

As I understand it, the unifying principle of DIR is that there should be good reasons for what's prescribed. We were encouraged to ask questions in Fundies about "why". Although Andy has clearly made the decision to change what he's doing, no matter whether it's DIR or not, it's still a legitimate question as to WHY the recommended positions for the lighthead, SPG, and canister are what they are . . . and the answers might be illuminating to non-DIR divers who might (for whatever insane reason) be reading the thread. What need, then, to be snide?

Welcome to scubaboard. Seriously, there are many questions out there asked by newcomers who have quickly learned to preface their questions with phrases such as "this is not a troll", "serious question here", "don't flame me", etc. Just a general observation...

so, the reason why i threw that previous question out there about the silt-out, was that i've read trip-reports of cave 1 classes where it was mentioned that having the light on the right hand screwed everything up (but without getting into specifics). i was just speculating on the kind of things that might be, and hoping to draw out some people who have taken cave 1 and encountered issues with GUE line protocol and the light in the right hand...

One possible reason is that we know that Andy has been through fundies... and the whys of most of these things are covered. So it is easy for someone to think that Andy is trolling, since most would think that he already knows these answers...
