Location
Lake Texoma, Texas
Found in Lake Erie, It has a W on the opposite side of the D & C

Any ideas ?

first guess:

it could mean the D&C Steamship line, which operated out of
Detroit. in which case, it is probably a cabin key?

second guess (which i now think is a bad one):

the D&C could mean either the Dayton and Cincinnati (Railroad) or the
Dayton and Chicago (Railroad).

i would guess this is a key to a station box in the Detroit station?

(reality check: why would a railroad running from Dayton to either Cincinnati
or Chicago go through Detroit???)

Wow, you guys were really close. . . .

According to John at the Marine Historical Society of Detroit

It's a cabin key from Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company in Detroit, Mich.

John said that the W probably stands for the Western States, Sidewheel Overnight Passenger and Freight Steamer built in 1902 since that was the only ship D&C had with a "W".

Ran back and forth from Detroit to Buffalo every night.

Very cool ! ! !

Very, very cool!

Must...resist...urge to say, "very, very, very, cool".

Nice find, my guess was going to be a hotel key but I would have been wrong so I pre-retract my guess to avoid embarassment. I hope to find treasure like that some day, it looks to be in good condition.

Just out of curiosity, was it out in the middle of nowhere or do you know the wreck is nearby?
