I may have not gone to med school, but I'm still a Doctor of LoveI didn’t know anything about Jeff Bozanic before posting, I just appreciated the historical value of the tidy timeline he assembled. Wasn’t my intention to press on a nerve.
He was cited in the linked article. You are really scraping the barrel if that is the best source you can come up with.Sutton used to be here on the board... What was sourced from him???
Dick Race I think was the first Great Lakes Scuba Diver to use mixed gases in 76 or so. Greg Busch is up there too, but he dove both hard hat and scuba on the Pewabic. Heli-air was it.He was cited in the linked article. You are really scraping the barrel if that is the best source you can come up with.

Max Nohl was doing "armored suit" diving. Scuba diving was I think Dick Race. Maybe Bill Chors second.I don't know if Mr. Nohl was actually the first but 420' in Lake Michigan in 1937 is pretty badass and a bit earlier than 76'

I don't believe masks became wide spread until after the 40s. I just sent an email to Paul Ehorn who started doing mix in 1980. He'll know who was the first.Given the year and it still being self-contained, I'm giving Gene Nohl credit
ETA: did they even have modern masks in the 30s? Hard hat would have been it as I understand.
