FinnMom, thanks for that post! I have to admit, it had never occurred to me to think about falling off the dock while carrying my reg-less rig to the boat. I will think about it now!

Another reason when we do dive Lake Erie from the Osprey we set up gear on land and carry the whole rig onto the boat. It also makes it easier and is certainly more considerate of others. setting up doubles on a boat full of divers can take some room. Especially if they all are doing it. Setting them up on the dock or in the parking lot means you walk on with them, set em in place, then take your time doing ancillary stuff. And you're not trying to set them up on a boat that may be swaying and rocking a little at the dock.

I'm in the habit of orally inflating my sidemount BC before I hit the water on every dive. It's automatic and I don't think about it any more, from shore or the boat. The second it's on you, blow it up. You should be able to catch it on pre-splash checks too - every backmount diver power-inflates to check in part that their wing holds air; you should be oral-inflating to check the same.

I was just bloody lucky. The bow of a boat tried to scrape me off a narrow walkway and I guess the God that loves fools gave me the brilliant idea to snatch its side rail with both hands and step into the boat, FAST. Didn't even fall down (that too would have hurt). It was an amazing stroke of luck but I can still remember that "someone just walked on my grave" feeling.

Well I greatly appreciate this thread and everyone that has contributed. I think some great information has been shared after me sharing my "teaching moment" ....
