...were lucky to get together in the first place!

Just picked up a BP/W set-up, as well as some gear for my upcoming wreck course...

  • Dive-Rite SS backplate, Deluxe harness, crotch strap, dual tank straps, several extra d-rings, etc, etc,
    Dive-Rite Rec Wing and LPI
    Halcyon ACB weight system
Halcyon 60lb semi-closed lift bag and backplate pouch
    Halcyon Pathfinder reel

Was able to get in the pool with all of it the other night to tweak it all before taking it out in open water. With a drysuit (no undies) and no lead I was perfectly neutral, maybe even 2-4 pounds overweighted. Was nice to have so much "less" than with a BCD, even a back inflate.

Wow, that's great. I guess what you are saying is that with all this new equipment, the backplate and etc, etc your total weight was significantly more than the total weight when you were just wearing a back-inflate bc.

How much free weight did you use when wearing the back-inflate? With that number one could come close to determing how much more weight you were wearing as a result of all your new gear.

Sounds like some real nice stuff you got there.

Possibly, but recall that the BCD (SeaQuest Balance) had some positive buoyancy in and of itself - maybe +4lbs. Of course there's six pounds for the backplate itself, maybe another pound or two for d-rings, buckles, etc. There's a "real net shift" of 12 pounds or so with only an actual shift of 6-8.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating - so I'll know for sure only when I dive. Last week in freshwater with the BCD I had 22lbs with a dry suit and three pairs of undies, hood, gloves and a heavier tank (steel 98) vs no hood/gloves, and an 80cf steel tank. I'm gonna guess that in a similar configuration I'd be able to wear only about 10lbs

22 Original weight
-6 Backplate weight
-2 D-rings, clips, buckles, etc
-4 Losing the 4lbs positive of the BCD
10

I guess the Balance would have some positive bouyancy to it but I was thinking that with this list of stuff:

Dive-Rite SS backplate, Deluxe harness, crotch strap, dual tank straps, several extra d-rings, etc, etc,
Dive-Rite Rec Wing and LPI
Halcyon ACB weight system
Halcyon 60lb semi-closed lift bag and backplate pouch
Halcyon Pathfinder reel

I was thinking you might have as much or more positive bouyancy as before.

After some real diving and the ole pudding test let me know how it all works out.

Here's an update - though no "real" diving as of yet.

Switched up the config a bit, adding the Halcyon 6lb single tank adapter.

Dressed as I would be "in the wild" with the Bare big-thick undies, a layer of polypro, gloves, hood, etc - and an EMPTY tank I was perfectly weighted WITH NO LEAD at all.

The harness is sweet now with NOTHING on the front of me but a buckle.

But the fricken pool was 86deg! I must have lost 5lbs sweating but it was worth it to tweak the config as close as possible to real-world.

Hopefully will jump in a quarry tomorrow - 43deg - and see how it fares.
