Pokeman...now there is a reliable source. People fly (without a plane)..etc.

If this is a serious thread..either a hooka system or a spare air. You could also have a cosmetic surgeon build you a set of gills.

There is an idea! The surgery Kevin Costner had for "Waterworld."

We could put the rebreather people out of business.

Didn't Patrick Duffey have the same surgery for the TV show he did in the 70's?

i want to buy what you been smoking,,.. sounds like a great escape from reality,,...lol

chicnstu:
I've seen in some movies and shows (Star Wars, Pokemon) these things that the people put in their mouth and they could breathe underwater while using them. I'm thinking that they work by filtering the oxygen from the water to you. If these exist, where can I get one?

Oh, if only I had three wishes.

There are all sorts of cool ways to extract oxygen from water,
including
..snip..
electrolysis
..snip..

Just curious how you get O2 from electrolysis of water.

If you could electrolise pure water I agree it would give you
Energy + 2 x H2O => 2 H2 + O2
but water is a bad conductor so you need to add something.

In the case of seawater you already have a lot of salt present. Say NaCl.
Depending on the NaCl concentration, at the anode you can generate mainly O or Cl gas.
And of course Chlorine gas reacts with water to form Hydrochloric acid and mixed Chlorine oxides, all of which are water soluble, So you may not get any bubbles at the anode.
So you will need to carry around a barrel of some other salt or maybe sulphuric acid for the reaction in addition to your power supply.
Problem is it starts to get a little large.

The problems with making a device to extract oxygen from the water are a) as already mentioned, the device would have to allow huge amounts of water to pass through it to extract enough oxygen for us to use and b) you can't breathe pure oxygen at depth, you would still need nitrogen. I suppose you could make something that would diffuse the oxygen straight into your circulatory system, but you would still need air to excrete the carbon dioxide. Or you could get a tank. Whichever is easiest for you.

chicnstu obviously saw episode 3.

i had the same kind of thoughts when i saw that little 'pen' that obi-wan was breathing off of underwater -- wondered if that was a little tank, or if it was some kind of gills to extract O2 from the water. and what kind of bottom time you could get off of it... is that a spare air, or is that a rebreather that would let you got to 800 fsw?

I recomend a minature fusion reactor. Split H2O into Hydrogen and Oxygen. Fuse hydrogen to form Helium and remix in the right proportions to have HelOx. And you can run all your lights and scooters (and a city)on the surplus power.
I think I've seen one of them at Radioshack.
