I couldn't dive today. Bloomberg Financial News had sent a reporter and videographer out to Catalina Island to interview Jean-Michel Cousteau and me for a piece they are doing on diving Catalina. The reporter (Nadia) and her husband (Matt) are active divers and write dive- and travel-related pieces to give diversity to the readership.

We motored down to Howland's Landing where Jean-Michel's Family Camp was in session. He and Dick Murphy were out diving with the kids, so they set up my interview first. It went very well... I was animated (heck, I was talking about diving and Catalina!) and apparently gave very usable responses to their questions.

JMC and Murf arrived just after my interview and then JMC was interviewed after they showered. I filmed the interview for a short piece in my cable TV show.

The three of us along with the likes of Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Milton Love and others had participated in early Cousteau programs at my school called Project Ocean Search Catalina back in the 70's.

After the interview Murf showed me through the Camp so I could see the progress they had made since my last visit. The organic garden was producing food that was used at the camp and sold in town, they recycled most of their waste, alternate energy systems were functioning. Very cool. This site is being used as a prototype for their Family Camps elsewhere (13 other locations world-wide).

We then went to lunch. JMC's SO Nan introduced me to several of the families sitting at our table. The face on a young boy (11, 12?) brightened when he heard my name. He asked "are you THE Dr.Bill?" I asked what he meant, and he said he had one of Dr. Bill's DVD's and really loved watching it. He thought it was very funny. Believe me... THAT made my day!

nice.....

Congrats to THE Dr bill! Make sure to post again when they complete this project and make you famous!

Were you afraid he was gonna say "THE Dr.Bill ... my Daddy !" ?

J/K. ;) Congrats, Dr Bill. Must be nice being famous :)

Very cool! I'm glad your videos are reaching the minds of children - it's nice to share what you see down there with people. I got a new camera recently and I've been doing some videos, they aren't the best quality but both my diving and non-diving friends love them.

I actually currently work in Dr. Milton Love's lab (The Love Lab) at UCSB right now. That's cool that you use to work with him! He's a cool guy.

Geez, I hate to add the the head-swelling here, but, two weeks ago, on a Saturday morning, my wife and I arrived on Catalina for our first "independent" dives. (Our OW class went there previously...)

After giving our equipment to the baggage service and starting the walk, we passed three people standing on the wooden boardwalk area talking. I just happened to look directly at the face of the one man and said to myself, "Holy Sh....I think thats Dr. Bill!"

lol, my reaction was kinda funny, you'd think I just saw some movie star or something... its weird to recognize someone from just an avatar picture.

I bet Dr Bill's license and passport photos were taken in a wetsuit too!
